Achievement of a Program for the Maintenance of 200 Power Transmission Stations and Converting Overhead Lines to Underground Cables in Sharjah

The Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority, through its Power Transmission Department, executed regular maintenance programs for over 200 transmission and distribution stations in 2025. This initiative aims to enhance the reliability of the electricity network and improve the efficiency of power transmission stations, aligning with global best practices in operations and maintenance.

Engineer Hamad Al-Tuniji, Director of the Power Transmission Department, stated that the authority continues its efforts to strengthen the electrical network by conducting scheduled and preventive maintenance with qualified technical teams adhering to top standards. The maintenance program encompasses the upkeep of power transmission stations, transformers, and high-voltage lines across various regions of Sharjah. The authority places significant emphasis on regular and preventive maintenance, ensuring the availability of original spare parts and quality assurance to uphold the efficiency of its equipment and facilities.

Engineer Abdullah Al-Kous, Deputy Director of the Power Transmission Department, further elaborated that the maintenance program executed in 2025 included servicing 144 electricity transmission and distribution stations operating at 132 kV and 33 kV. Additionally, protection systems were updated by replacing relays with advanced systems for 45 relays, and oil renewal and treatment were performed for 23 transformers. Safety inspections and analyses were conducted for 45 transformers at 132 kV, along with battery replacements to restore efficiency in 40 stations. Furthermore, load tap changers were replaced for 24 transformers. A dynamic transformer operating at 220 kV at the Al-Tai station was also activated, contributing to improved voltage quality and network stability. The project also involved converting overhead lines linking the Al-Tai station to the Industrial 17 station into underground cables, thereby enhancing reliability and reducing faults caused by environmental factors.

The authority aims to enhance operational and technical processes that monitor the electrical network in Sharjah, ensuring the provision of necessary operational and maintenance supplies, as well as reviewing and implementing maintenance programs to develop and improve the electrical grid.
