Starlink: High-Speed Satellite Internet in the UAE

230 AED for residential use and up to 300 AED for the basic package

185 AED for the mobile package with 100 GB capacity, reaching up to 605 AED for unlimited packages

1,550 AED for the standard home package

Starlink, a satellite internet service from SpaceX founded by Elon Musk, has launched its services in the UAE, adding a new dimension to the telecommunications market by providing a space-based internet option alongside traditional ground networks. The service operates through a network of low Earth orbit satellites, enabling internet connectivity across vast geographical areas without the need for established infrastructure.

Regarding pricing, the standard home package costs about 1,550 AED, including shipping, with a delivery time estimated between one to two weeks. This package comprises a satellite dish, a router, and all necessary equipment for setup. The standard package is a crucial element in assessing economic feasibility, particularly for individual users.

The service utilizes lightweight receivers weighing less than 3 kg, which have no moving parts and can withstand harsh weather conditions.

Starlink offers residential packages starting at 230 AED monthly, rising to 300 AED for the basic offering. Business packages begin at around 248 AED monthly. Additionally, mobile usage plans start from about 185 AED monthly for 100 GB and can go up to approximately 605 AED for unlimited options, providing users with the flexibility to choose plans based on their specific needs.

Performance-wise, Starlink delivers adequate speeds for everyday activities like streaming and remote work, with relatively low latency compared to traditional satellite internet services. However, it may not match the stability and speed of city fiber networks. The service also serves areas where conventional networks struggle to provide coverage, such as desert regions or temporary projects, acting as a backup option to ensure business continuity. The mobility feature enhances its utility across sectors that depend on fieldwork.

Starlink offers internet access via satellites in low Earth orbit, allowing for higher speeds and lower latency compared to satellites operating at much higher altitudes. This network provides fast internet with quick response times, ensuring extensive coverage even in remote locations.

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority previously mentioned efforts to establish new regulations for satellite internet services within the country. Starlink has already secured a regulatory license in 2024 for a term of about 10 years, allowing it to provide maritime satellite internet services.

Furthermore, in November, Emirates Airlines announced plans to equip its fleet with Starlink to provide onboard internet services.

In the Middle East, the service is also available in several countries, including Qatar, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, and Jordan.

This announcement follows the recent launch of the service in Kuwait as part of the company’s broader expansion strategy in the region, driven by the increasing demand for satellite internet solutions as alternatives or complements to traditional telecommunications networks.
