Etihad Airways Introduces Five New Destinations and 28 Extra Flights to China

Etihad Airways has announced a significant expansion of its flight network in mainland China, introducing five new destinations and adding 28 weekly flights. This initiative marks one of the largest increases in capacity within a single market in recent years.

With this expansion, Etihad will operate direct flights from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen. This will bring the airline’s total operations in China to 35 weekly flights across six destinations, including its existing daily service to Beijing Daxing.

All flights will be operated using Etihad’s fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, which feature 28 seats in business class and 262 seats in economy class.

According to Etihad Airways, this expansion underscores the growing strategic importance of the UAE–China corridor, by enhancing connections in trade, tourism, and investment, and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s status as a global gateway linking China with markets in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America.

Moreover, the expansion will boost passenger and cargo traffic between the two nations, providing greater access to major commercial, industrial, and technological hubs in China. It will also enhance freight connectivity through key manufacturing and export centers, supporting global supply chains and high-value trade flows.

All new routes will be included under the joint cooperation agreement between Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines, further enhancing connectivity between the UAE and China through coordinated services at major gateways. Currently, China Eastern Airlines operates routes connecting Shanghai, Kunming, and Xi’an to the UAE.

Additionally, this expansion supports the ongoing partnership in freight services between Etihad Airways and SF Airlines, which enhances air cargo connectivity and supports the movement of goods across key trade routes between China and global markets.

Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of Etihad Airways, stated that the relationship between the UAE and China continues to thrive. Today’s announcement reflects the strength of this partnership and its promising outlook. The network expansion, backed by a solid collaboration with China Eastern Airlines, connects unique tourist destinations with growing commercial centers, fostering shared and sustainable economic prosperity for both nations.

Antònio Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, emphasized that China is a strategically vital market for the airline and a cornerstone of its growth strategy. This expansion represents a significant increase in capacity and is a clear indication of its long-term commitment to this market.

He added that by introducing five new destinations and increasing flight frequencies, Etihad is enhancing connectivity across one of the world’s most important economic corridors, supporting the rising demand for travel and trade, while simultaneously establishing Abu Dhabi as a key global travel and trade hub, aligned with the emirate’s long-term economic ambitions.

Each of the five new destinations plays a crucial role in the economic and cultural landscape of China, which enhances Etihad’s ability to meet the diverse needs of passenger and air cargo services. Shanghai Pudong is an international financial center and a major hub for freight, Guangzhou serves as a key manufacturing and trade gateway in southern China, Chengdu is an emerging center for innovation and technology in western China, Hangzhou leads in the digital economy and e-commerce, while Shenzhen is a global tech powerhouse and major export market.

This announcement signifies a qualitative expansion of Etihad Airways’ presence in China, providing clients in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas with broader access to key commercial and cultural centers in China through Abu Dhabi.
