Financial Times: Dubai, an Eternal City

Diverse Life in Dubai: Resilience Amidst Challenges

A detailed report from a renowned financial publication describes Dubai as an “eternal city”. It highlights Dubai’s status as the largest city in the UAE by population, a favored destination for both Arab and Western expatriates, as well as residents from South Asia.

The report emphasizes Dubai’s robust workforce, which allows wealthy individuals to enjoy luxurious lifestyles. Simultaneously, millions of residents work in banks and institutions or manage their own businesses, helping to keep the flow of capital thriving in the city.

The author, Rahul Bhatia, shares insights from a friend living in Dubai, who notes that despite the ongoing regional conflicts affecting the Middle East for over a month, daily life continues unhindered. There are no apparent risks or fears. The friend describes a bustling office environment, vibrant neighborhoods, and a smoothly operating business scene, expressing a strong disinterest in returning to India, even temporarily. He appreciates the efforts of the Dubai government, stating, “They are fantastic and genuinely care about the residents,” affirming that Dubai is the prime place to reside.

Indeed, shops remain operational, and prices have remained largely stable. This stability fosters a deep-rooted belief among Dubai residents, particularly among various communities that have migrated there, that every other location seems dull in comparison. Many refer to Dubai as “the golden bird,” a fortunate place, and a city where fortunes can change swiftly.

Such qualities have attracted individuals from India, Pakistan, and various other nationalities, easing the common feelings of homesickness often associated with migration, and quickly dispelling doubts. In this vibrant city, substantial wealth can be created through hard work and a touch of luck. This opportunity begins at the Dubai Airport, where travelers passing through the duty-free area can purchase lottery tickets at reasonable prices for a chance to win luxury cars. In various instances, peculiar events unfold; however, in Dubai, the prevalence of unusual happenings seems more pronounced.

In another interview with a former resident who lived in Dubai for thirty years, it is clear that the city has left a lasting impression on him. He remarks, “There are very few places like Dubai in the world. It offers a high standard of living, substantial security, excellent transportation networks, and advanced infrastructure that surpasses that of many Western countries, all while being multicultural.”

He continues, stating that Dubai caters to everyone, from laborers to billionaires, providing a quality of life that aligns with their purchasing power. “There is no income tax, and corporate taxes are low. People respect the law, and the government is innovative and highly supportive, creating an environment conducive to business growth. Living in Dubai is easier, especially with the golden visa program. Can you effortlessly travel to Singapore? Certainly not.”

The report mentions that despite the impacts of warfare in the Middle East, there is a prevailing sense of optimism. This is partially attributed to reassuring morning news reports, which highlight an economic package aimed at boosting confidence. Business leaders are well aware of the resilience of Dubai’s economic model.

Part of this optimism stems from the government’s calm initiatives to reassure residents. For example, students across the nation continue their education online, with textbooks delivered to their homes. Transportation costs for seniors have been reduced, parking fees and road tolls have been eliminated, and visa restrictions have been relaxed. Authorities impose hefty fines on merchants who excessively raise prices rapidly. Upcoming plans include establishing public parks, tripling the number of trees, and constructing affordable schools. All these actions enhance the sense of safety and maintain the natural progression of life.
