China’s Ambassador to the US Calls for Resolution of Trade Conflict, Yet Signals Willingness to Compete

China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, has called on the US to find commonality with China and advocate for peaceful coexistence, while also warning of China’s willingness to respond forcefully amid the ongoing trade conflict.

During a public gathering in Washington, the details of which were shared on the Chinese embassy’s website, Xie expressed that tariffs could have catastrophic effects on the global economy, likening the current situation to the Great Depression precipitated by US tariffs in 1930.

Utilizing concepts from traditional Chinese medicine, such as the balance of yin and yang, Xie contended that harmonious relations should direct interactions between the two largest economies in the world.

“A well-crafted traditional Chinese medicine recipe typically includes various complementary ingredients that work together to achieve optimal health,” Xie noted, suggesting that similarly, the world can accommodate both China and the US. “We should aim for peaceful coexistence rather than confrontation, and support each other’s success instead of falling into a mutually detrimental situation.”

The ongoing trade dispute has effectively stalled the extensive trade between these two economic giants, characterized by tariffs exceeding 100% in both directions, along with numerous trade, investment, and cultural barriers.

On Saturday, China’s leading shipbuilding association criticized a US initiative to implement port fees on vessels associated with China.

While countries like Japan and Taiwan are either engaging in or preparing for negotiations with Washington regarding President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, there are currently no plans for high-level discussions with China.

Trump stated on Friday that the US is having positive private discussions with China amidst the trade war. “By the way, we have nice conversations going with China,” he told reporters at the White House. “It’s, like, really very good.” He did not provide any further information.

China has asserted that the US must show respect before any discussions can occur. Xie reiterated China’s opposition to the trade war, emphasizing that the country would respond to any nation that levies tariffs against it.
