US Weighs Relaxation of Chip Export Restrictions to UAE

  • UAE aims for increased semiconductor access
  • Advocating for expanded opportunities
  • Trump’s visit to the Gulf is crucial

The United States is contemplating the possibility of relaxing its regulations on the export of advanced semiconductors to the United Arab Emirates, as reported by a news source.

During his upcoming visit to the Gulf, President Donald Trump may announce the initiation of discussions regarding a semiconductor trade agreement, although the source of this information was not disclosed.

Discussions are gaining momentum, although no final decisions have been made yet.

In March, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser and deputy ruler of Abu Dhabi, visited Washington to advocate for the easing of restrictions on semiconductor exports to the UAE.

Trump is scheduled to arrive in the UAE the week after next, as part of a wider regional trip slated for May 13 to 16.

This puts him in the region on May 15, coinciding with the implementation of stricter regulations on U.S. semiconductor exports.

The new rules, which were introduced in January, classify the UAE as a “second-tier” nation, limiting U.S. semiconductor exports to a maximum of 50,000 advanced processors, with potential for additional supplies contingent upon security agreements.

Globally, the demand for AI-capable microchips has surged, making these components a highly sought-after geopolitical asset due to their significance in both advanced and consumer technologies.

Since 2023, the U.S. government has mandated a license for exporting Nvidia chips to the UAE and other Gulf countries, citing concerns about the possibility of these technologies being rerouted to China.

The UAE has actively sought to alleviate these apprehensions by forming partnerships with U.S. firms such as Microsoft and divesting from Chinese enterprises.
