The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is seeking to enhance its Earth Observation (EO) capabilities. The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) is set to introduce what it claims to be the first commercial manufacturing facility for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites in the Middle East, in collaboration with Space42. This announcement was made on May 20.
The new facility, named Space42 Space Systems, will focus on the design, assembly, and testing of SAR satellites intended for EO applications, ensuring that Abu Dhabi gains independent access to satellite-based intelligence. This initiative represents the first local development of such capabilities for commercial purposes, allowing the UAE to produce sophisticated EO satellites autonomously and enhancing its national space infrastructure.
Managed by Space42, Space42 Space Systems will handle the entire production process, from system design to launch readiness. This initiative supports the company’s ambition to establish sovereign EO capabilities while creating a scalable global space ecosystem based in Abu Dhabi. With this facility, Abu Dhabi will be able to assemble, integrate, and test commercial SAR satellites, aiming to position the emirate as a leader in the global space economy and solidifying its reputation as a hub for space innovation. The project will be carried out by Space42, which is dedicated to utilizing top-tier technology in systems integration, advanced testing, and launch preparation.
“Establishing commercial satellite manufacturing in the UAE represents a key milestone in executing Space42’s strategic vision. It not only enhances our sovereign EO capabilities but also strengthens our role as a leading partner in premium geospatial data. Abu Dhabi is the focal point of this vision, providing an ideal environment for testing, scaling, and exporting space-based capabilities that are both locally developed and globally applicable. With ADIO’s partnership, we are transforming strategic goals into scalable infrastructure and nurturing Emirati talent that will influence the future of this industry,” stated Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Banayat Smart Solutions at Space42.
