Etihad Airways Announces New Flights to Charlotte Following Trump’s UAE Visit
Ted Reed reports that the decision by Etihad Airways to introduce flights to Charlotte can be linked to President Trump’s recent trip to the Middle East. Prior to this visit, there had been no discussions between the airline and the airport.
- Etihad had not engaged in any conversations regarding service to Charlotte airport until after President Trump’s arrival in the UAE.
- They reached out to airport officials just one day before Trump’s visit and made the service announcement the following day.
- Additionally, Etihad has placed an order for 28 Boeing widebody aircraft equipped with GE engines.
It’s intriguing to note that they are expanding their operations in the U.S. as a result of the Trump presidency. During his previous term, discussions revolved around whether they had too extensive a presence in the market. U.S. airlines such as Delta, United, and American voiced concerns that Etihad, Emirates, and Qatar received government subsidies and were therefore unfit for the U.S. market. The U.S. carriers preferred limited options for consumers, as this typically leads to higher ticket prices.
As a part of a campaign driven by Delta, American Airlines stopped its codesharing agreement with both Qatar and Etihad. Even though Etihad was already pulling back its ambitions, it decided to withdraw from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Dallas routes.
Etihad Business Class
The campaign waged by U.S. airlines did not gain traction under the Obama administration, but major carriers were optimistic that a Trump administration would lean toward protectionist policies. This irony has come to light, as Trump’s protectionism has now posed challenges for these airlines. They engaged in a campaign that was often misleading, culminating in a noted Oval Office meeting orchestrated by Peter Navarro, where Delta did not attend.
While Delta was absent, Trump admonished the airline for purchasing Airbus aircraft, noting that the Gulf carriers favored Boeing. Trump also criticized American Airlines CEO Doug Parker, citing concerns about his company’s declining stock values. Ultimately, Trump advised the U.S. airlines to submit a formal complaint to the Department of Transportation, a step they have avoided due to a lack of valid claims under U.S. law.
About Abu Dhabi International Airport
Personally, I tend to avoid Charlotte airport due to its less favorable environment, characterized by low ceilings and crowded terminals; it seems ill-suited for the traffic generated by American Airlines, which has prioritized cost efficiency to satisfy its financial objectives.
Charlotte Airport B Concourse
The new flight service is a notable achievement for Charlotte, despite appearing commercially unconventional. Although there is a mileage partnership with American Airlines (albeit with significant limitations on using AAdvantage miles for premium travel with Etihad), there are currently no status earning opportunities or codesharing arrangements. While Charlotte may serve as a better connecting hub from the Southeast compared to New York JFK, this doesn’t hold much significance for ultra-long-haul flights, which are likely to consist mostly of low-yield travelers visiting friends and relatives heading to India and Pakistan.
Etihad’s new Charlotte route will operate four times a week using a Boeing 787, starting on May 4, 2026. With this new addition, Charlotte joins New York JFK, Washington Dulles, Chicago O’Hare, Boston, and Atlanta (which begins service on July 2) as the airline’s destinations in the U.S.
