UAE Calls Israeli Envoy Amid Outrage Over ‘Appalling’ Assaults on Palestinians in Jerusalem

AMMAN — The United Arab Emirates has summoned the Israeli ambassador to express its disapproval of “provocative actions by Israeli extremists” during a recent demonstration in Jerusalem, according to the state news agency, WAM.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement highlighting Abu Dhabi’s condemnation of the “deplorable and offensive violations against the Palestinian people” that occurred in the vicinity of the Al Aqsa Mosque and within the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.

The UAE stressed the importance of acknowledging the “custodial role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan over the holy sites,” in line with international law and historical context, and insisted on safeguarding the authority of the Jerusalem Endowment Administration that oversees the management of Al Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, and adjacent areas.

In its statement, the ministry reaffirmed the UAE’s rejection of any actions that contravene resolutions of international legitimacy and might escalate tensions further. “The UAE emphasized the necessity of maintaining the current status of Al Aqsa Mosque and underscored the significance of safeguarding all holy sites in Jerusalem, which represent coexistence and peace,” it stated.

WAM reported that “the UAE pointed out that these provocative and arbitrary actions amount to dangerous incitement against Muslims and constitute a blatant disrespect for the sanctity of the holy city.”

The ministry urged the Israeli government to take responsibility, ensure accountability for all guilty parties regardless of their status, and implement immediate measures to prevent the misuse of Jerusalem for violence, extremism, and incitement. “The UAE warns that failure to take action will be perceived as tacit approval that could exacerbate the cycle of hatred, racism, and instability.”
