All residents of the United Arab Emirates will soon have access to ChatGPT Plus, the enhanced version of OpenAI’s chatbot, following a significant agreement between the UAE government and OpenAI, as announced in May.
The arrangement ensures nationwide access, although it does not provide individual free subscriptions. Currently, ChatGPT’s free version is unavailable in the UAE, while ChatGPT Plus is offered at a monthly subscription of $20.
According to OpenAI, “This partnership will make the UAE the first nation to facilitate nationwide access to ChatGPT, enabling individuals across the country to utilize OpenAI’s technology.”
The collaboration aims to assist the UAE in harnessing OpenAI’s tools across key sectors such as government, energy, healthcare, education, and transportation, promoting innovation and driving economic growth while delivering long-term benefits to the community.
This announcement follows the UAE’s commitment to invest $1.4 trillion in the United States to support job creation, boost economic development, and assist the US in maintaining its technological edge.
### Operated through Stargate UAE
The project will be executed via Stargate UAE, marking the initial international rollout of Stargate, OpenAI’s infrastructure platform. OpenAI described Stargate as part of its vision to establish large-scale computing capabilities globally, aimed at fostering safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence.
Stargate UAE will involve the creation of a one-gigawatt AI computing cluster in Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with firms like G42, Oracle, NVIDIA, and Cisco. The first phase is projected to generate approximately 200 megawatts by 2026.
### Supporting Global Tech Development Alongside US Interests
OpenAI hopes this initiative will inspire other nations to enter into similar partnerships as part of its OpenAI for Countries program, with CSO Jason Kwon currently leading a roadshow across the Asia Pacific region.
“Our goal is to establish ten partnerships in critical countries and regions, laying the groundwork for a globally distributed, democratically empowered AI network,” stated OpenAI.
This initiative aims to help governments develop their own AI capabilities in alignment with US interests, reaffirming OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing US infrastructure while facilitating secure and responsible access to transformative AI for its allies.
