U.S., UAE, Switzerland, and Other Nations Denounce Lethal Assault on UN Humanitarian Convoy in Sudan

NAIROBI, Kenya — The ALPS coalition, which includes the governments of the United States, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, as well as the African Union and the United Nations, has expressed strong condemnation of a tragic assault on a UN humanitarian convoy in Sudan that resulted in the deaths of five aid workers and the loss of essential supplies.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families, colleagues, and communities of those who lost their lives while helping others in dire circumstances,” the coalition stated in a unified declaration.

The incident took place on Monday evening near El Koma in North Darfur province, while the convoy was heading towards El Fasher.

The United Nations verified the fatalities and the destruction of several aid trucks.

As reported by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the convoy—a collaborative mission of the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF—comprised 15 trucks that had traveled over 1,800 kilometers from Port Sudan, transporting essential nutritional and food provisions.

Dujarric described the attack as “a horrific act of violence,” speaking to the media in New York on Tuesday.

“Numerous trucks were incinerated, and crucial humanitarian supplies were lost. This marked the first UN humanitarian convoy to reach El Fasher in over a year,” he added.

The UN has noted that discussions were being held with local authorities to secure safe transit to El Fasher at the time the attack occurred.

The identity of the attackers remains unknown, with rival factions in Sudan blaming one another for the incident.

The ALPS coalition stressed that assaults on civilians, humanitarian workers, and relief assets represent significant breaches of international humanitarian law.

“We urgently emphasize the necessity for complete adherence to international humanitarian law, which includes safeguarding civilians and humanitarian personnel,” the statement urged. “We call on all parties to ensure unimpeded humanitarian access to those in need.”

Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a violent civil war, sparked by clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict has displaced millions and is characterized by extensive human rights violations, including ethnic conflict and widespread sexual violence, especially in Darfur.

The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with a significant portion of the population now relying on aid for survival.
