Commerce and Economy at the Forefront of UAE National Priorities

Two economic experts have highlighted that the United Arab Emirates is adopting a comprehensive developmental approach that prioritizes human capital, sustainable economy, and global competitiveness. They noted that the establishment of a Ministry of Foreign Trade and the renaming of the Ministry of Economy to the Ministry of Economy and Tourism underscore the dynamic performance of the federal government and its ability to keep pace with global changes through a clear and proactive vision. This reflects the astute vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai.

Jamal bin Saif Al-Ghurair, an economic expert, observed that the UAE government is among the most dynamic and responsive in the Arab world, adopting a modern management approach focused on continuous development as needed. The wise leadership does not wait for the future but actively updates ministries, empowers leadership, and initiates future-forward initiatives.

He stated, “We are witnessing positive changes within the Ministry of Economy, which is placing greater emphasis and focus on vital areas such as foreign trade, tourism, and artificial intelligence.”

He added that the implementation of a national artificial intelligence framework — as an advisory member of the Council of Ministers and the Ministerial Development Council, along with all boards of directors of federal agencies and governmental companies starting in January 2026 — signifies a concentrated effort on technology and artificial intelligence.

“We are the first nation in the world to appoint a Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence and to utilize digital tools in services, aiming for a paperless government for several years now,” he remarked.

“Today, we see this sector gaining more importance, bringing it closer to decision-making centers and providing counsel to the esteemed Council of Ministers.”

He further emphasized that this decision is a proactive measure, with its timing being highly significant, given the substantial investments made in this sector by the state.

Jamal Al-Ghurair affirmed that the UAE government is future-oriented, not focused merely on the present, and operates with long-term visions including (UAE Vision 2031) and (Mars 2117 Strategy). He pointed out that post-oil economic diversification and foreign trade are crucial components of the Gross National Product.

“We congratulate the UAE, both government and people. We are fortunate to have leadership that values talent and empowerment, offering opportunities to youth and women in leadership roles, as seen in the appointments of young ministers and the involvement of young women in strategic areas like food security, society, education, tourism, and artificial intelligence,” he noted.

He added, “We have a flexible and innovative government that does not remain stagnant, with the mission of serving humanity and achieving future goals.”

Strategic Changes

Ahmed Obaid Al-Qaseer, CEO of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), stated, “These strategic changes reflect a comprehensive developmental approach prioritizing human capital, sustainable economy, and global competitiveness, contributing to solidifying the UAE’s position as a globally influential center in the fields of economy, tourism, and international trade.”

He continued, “We believe that this step constitutes a significant boost towards enhancing the economic and tourism ecosystems within the country, opening new horizons for deepening partnerships and integrating efforts among various federal and local entities under a unified national vision.”
