A German court has ruled that the supermarket chain Aldi Süd is not permitted to sell its “Dubai Chocolate” bars, determining that the product is manufactured in Turkey rather than Dubai, as reported by The Sun. The Cologne Higher Regional Court issued its final verdict on Friday, overturning previous lower court decisions.
Aldi defended the product’s name, claiming that consumers understand “Dubai Chocolate” as a reference to a type of pastry filled with pistachios and kunefe, rather than a geographical origin. However, the court decided that the name misleads consumers, with 15 to 20 percent still associating it with Dubai. The court stated, “It is sufficient that about 15 to 20 percent of the concerned consumers still relate the term to a specific geographical origin.
