The Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has announced the commencement of aluminum production in its pilot reduction cells utilizing the EX technology, which represents the next generation of the new smelting process developed by the company.
This pilot project marks a significant milestone towards the widespread industrial adoption of this technology and serves as a foundational element for fostering growth in low-carbon primary aluminum production in the future, thereby strengthening the company’s leading position in global smelting technology.
EGA is implementing the latest innovations from the Fourth Industrial Revolution within this pilot initiative, including activating all modern applications and enhancing digital capabilities through artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics.
The CEO of EGA, Abdalisar Ben Kalban, remarked, “The initiation of production in our pilot reduction cells using the EX technology is a crucial step in reinforcing our leadership in smelting technology and supports our future business growth.”
“We look forward to increasing our primary aluminum production by leveraging advanced and intelligent smelting techniques to shape the future of the aluminum industry and enhance the value we provide through our global partnerships in this field.”
For over 35 years, EGA has developed its own aluminum smelting technologies domestically and has implemented these innovations in all phases of its smelter expansions and upgrades of older production lines to guarantee maximum efficiency.
In 2016, EGA became the first Emirati industrial company to license its aluminum smelting technology internationally through an agreement with Bahrain Aluminium to utilize its technology for the expansion of the sixth smelter line.
The EX technology is the tenth generation of smelting processes developed by EGA. Construction of the pilot cells for this technology began in late 2024. The EX technology is designed to enhance aluminum production while reducing energy consumption and emissions. The EX smelting cells provide higher productivity per square meter compared to EGA’s DX+ Ultra technology.
This technology is considered one of the most efficient smelting methods in the global aluminum industry. The new generation of this technology is anticipated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per ton of aluminum by 5% for the productivity-enhancing design and approximately 12% for the more energy-efficient design.
EGA launched its digital transformation initiative in 2021 to bolster its competitive edge, address challenges, and improve safety and sustainability. The company implemented over 80 applications of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, resulting in nearly $100 million in financial impact.
