“Cybersecurity”: 12,000 Hacks Through “Wi-Fi” Since the Start of the Year

The Cybersecurity Council of the UAE Government has issued a warning about the significant dangers associated with using unreliable and free open Wi-Fi networks. This alert follows the report of over 12,000 cyber intrusions occurring through these networks within the country since the beginning of the year.

Rising Cyber Threats

The council revealed that this staggering figure accounts for nearly 35% of the total cyber attacks faced by the nation, demonstrating that hackers and intruders are actively targeting users on these networks, which have become effective traps for stealing passwords, banking information, and personal data.

Risks of Open Wi-Fi Networks

The council emphasized that the perils of unsafe usage of open and free Wi-Fi networks pose a significant risk, potentially leading to the exposure of personal and financial information. This underlines the necessity for adopting advanced protective measures, notably the use of reliable VPN applications.

Dangers Encountered by Users

Individuals utilizing open internet networks may fall victim to numerous threats, including what is known as “man-in-the-middle” attacks. In such scenarios, cybercriminals can intercept and read transmitted data, record calls, redirect users to counterfeit websites, and even eavesdrop on telephone conversations. Additionally, they may install malware or spyware on users’ devices without their knowledge.

Commitment to Cyber Defense

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency, Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Cybersecurity Council, affirmed the country’s commitment to cultivating a secure cyberspace. Following directives from the leadership, the nation is dedicated to continuous efforts aimed at safeguarding users from escalating digital risks while adapting to rapid technological advancements. This initiative is part of a comprehensive national vision to reinforce trust in the country’s digital framework and enhance cybersecurity culture alongside safe browsing practices.

Awareness of Threats

The Cybersecurity Council also noted that many users are unaware of the level of threats that can arise from connecting to free Wi-Fi networks, particularly in public spaces such as cafes, airports, and shopping centers. Although these networks may seem convenient in terms of speed and cost, they often lack sufficient security, rendering them open to fraudulent activities and cyber breaches.

Recommended Safety Measures

To help users stay safe while browsing on public networks, the Cybersecurity Council has outlined three key steps:

  1. Use a Reliable VPN Application: This encrypts the user’s digital connection, making it difficult for unauthorized parties to intercept data.
  2. Activate Safe Browsing Features: Ensuring that the browser’s safe browsing settings are enabled helps prevent access to suspicious websites.
  3. Avoid Sensitive Logins: Refraining from logging into sensitive accounts, such as banking or personal email accounts, when on open Wi-Fi networks.

The council reiterated that employing a trustworthy VPN not only secures privacy but is also an effective tool for protecting digital identities in an interconnected world prone to repeated breaches. They stress the importance of having well-considered preventative measures and emphasize that awareness is the first line of defense against cybercrime.

Public Awareness Campaign

It’s noteworthy that the Cybersecurity Council has launched a weekly awareness campaign as part of the Cyber Pulse initiative. This year’s second week of the campaign is themed “Free Wi-Fi Services Could Expose Your Personal Data.” The aim is to educate the public on personal data protection strategies and the risks of using free Wi-Fi networks while providing guidance on how to counter various cyber threats. The campaign targets both individuals and organizations to enhance cybersecurity awareness and strengthen overall cyber resilience.
