Zayed International Airport has announced its achievement of the Level 2 certification for enhanced accessibility from the International Airports Council, marking a significant commitment to providing an inclusive and seamless travel experience for all passengers.
This milestone follows the Level 1 certification awarded to the airport in 2024, underscoring the ongoing advancements made by Abu Dhabi airports, particularly in promoting accessibility through the improvement of facilities, services, and technologies to ensure a comprehensive and equitable travel experience for everyone as a core aspect of their operations and guest experience.
The Level 2 certification demonstrates the implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for accessibility, supported by effective governance frameworks and extensive training, as well as the provision of services tailored to meet diverse needs. The certification notably enhances the traveler experience through the application of digital accessibility standards and universal design principles.
Moreover, the certification reflects the airport’s commitment to practices that exceed standard benchmarks by integrating inclusive design, services, and policies across all operations. Additionally, it emphasizes a strong focus on awareness programs aimed at employees, partners, and stakeholders to ensure that staff are equipped to support all categories of travelers. These initiatives are in alignment with national digital accessibility policies, Federal Law No. 29 on the rights of people with disabilities, and the national empowerment policy, all reinforcing the airport’s commitment to inclusivity at every level.
A Global Gateway
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, stated, “We inaugurated Zayed International Airport 18 months ago with a bold vision to establish a global gateway welcoming all guests. Achieving Level 2 certification, following our Level 1 certification in 2024, affirms our dedication to fulfilling our promises. This recognition is a testament to the tireless efforts of our teams, each of whom understood from day one that accessibility—ensuring access to facilities, services, and technologies—is an integral part of our identity, as the airport serves as Abu Dhabi’s aerial gateway and reflects the UAE’s values of inclusion and dignity for all.”
In addition to enhancing accessibility in operational processes, the airport has developed its digital platforms to support passengers from various demographics. The website has been designed according to WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards and features the Recite Me tool, making digital content accessible to individuals with visual impairments, dyslexia, or learning difficulties.
Assistive Tools
The website also offers instant translation in over 100 languages, alongside various assistive tools such as text-to-speech, supportive reading tools, and additional options to adjust fonts and styles, enhancing usability and interaction for all travelers. These efforts reinforce principles of inclusion and equality, positioning the airport as a socially responsible destination that places the traveler at the heart of everything they do. This achievement also reaffirms the airport’s commitment to collaborating with support groups and individuals with disabilities to ensure their voices are heard and considered in the design of the travel experience.
