On the island of Anjouan, a new ferry service was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by President Ghazali Othmani of the Comoros Union. This innovative service connects the islands of the Comoros archipelago in East Africa and is the first of its kind to facilitate the transportation of both individuals and vehicles.
The ferry service will be operated by Sardar International, a partnership between Abu Dhabi Ports Group and Resource Investments, a firm based in Abu Dhabi that focuses on strategic investments with positive impacts in both emerging and advanced markets.
Notable attendees at the launch included His Excellency Juma Rashid Al-Rumaithi, the UAE Ambassador to Moroni, along with several high-ranking officials.
This initiative is part of Sardar International’s efforts to enhance maritime trade and expand commercial operations in emerging markets, with a particular emphasis on Africa.
Abdulaziz Zayed Al-Shamsi, CEO of Sardar International, stated that this development demonstrates their ability to provide integrated maritime transport solutions that meet local community needs and contribute to the growth of businesses and economic progress in the region, following the guidance of wise leadership.
The transportation services will be managed by Nautum Marine, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Ports Group, aiming to strengthen connectivity between the region’s islands by providing a safe, reliable, and affordable means of transport for local communities. This will improve access to markets, healthcare, and educational services, as well as invigorate the tourism sector.
The new ferry, named “Yamila,” is capable of accommodating up to 190 passengers in air-conditioned cabins and can transport up to 45 vehicles. It will connect the port of Moroni, the main maritime gateway on the large island of Grande Comore, with the city of Moutsamoudou on the volcanic island of Anjouan, offering a faster and more reliable travel option between the two islands for both residents and visitors.
