“Despite the outcome, I believe we should take pride in our Giro performance, as we controlled the race for numerous stages. The team was exceptional, and Isaac is beginning to uncover his potential as we identify a promising champion in him. This marks a significant positive aspect of our journey.”
The emergence of the Mexican rider is a significant boost for the Emirati team; however, they witnessed their chance for overall victory slip away to a rival team in a single day. The day’s tactics played a crucial role, with Visma having Wout van Aert in the breakaway while UAE did not assign anyone to that position, nor could they support Del Toro when he was attacked.
“Having a rider in the breakaway could have made a difference, but there’s only one Wout van Aert; no one else can replicate that. It’s hard to say, but during the climb, Isaac might have been able to provide some assistance,” Gianetti remarks. “However, he was also pushing his limits. Afterward, when the pain subsides, it’s easy to think one could have done more. But racing is different.”
Richard Carapaz continually attacked Del Toro during the Alpine climb, and the 21-year-old’s reluctance to cooperate led Carapaz to decide against collaboration after the ascent. This decision significantly impacted the race, causing the gap to widen uncontrollably.
“It is what it is. We must honestly acknowledge Simon Yates’ outstanding performance, first and foremost. From our perspective, Isaac’s power metrics were impressively high. But yes, having someone in the breakaway could have potentially altered the outcome if circumstances allowed.”
The team concludes their Giro campaign in Rome with a second-place finish, and the situation regarding Juan Ayuso will also be assessed. For Del Toro, however, his standing within the team hierarchy has certainly improved. “He still has plenty of room for growth at just 21 years old. We can anticipate a lot from him. This represents a new status for him; I told him that he will be competing at this level in the years to come. The motivation for next year is clearly present. He has also realized that he is capable of winning the Giro.”
“He’s 21 and strong, but it’s our responsibility to allow him to develop gradually. We have other riders on the team as well, who also need opportunities. He has time, and it’s essential to nurture this talent thoughtfully. We did the same with Ayuso, who is another remarkable talent. We provide everyone with chances, but also consider the time they need to recover.”
