UAE Signs Agreement with WIPO to Enhance Intellectual Property System

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism has signed a collaboration agreement with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) with the aim of enhancing joint efforts to develop the intellectual property framework in the United Arab Emirates by aligning with global best practices and exchanging expertise in national policy and legislative development.

This agreement was signed during the participation of the UAE delegation in the 66th session of the WIPO member states’ assemblies held in Geneva.

His Excellency Abdulla bin Touk Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, emphasized that this agreement with WIPO marks a significant step towards strengthening the institutional framework of intellectual property in the UAE. This initiative aligns with the leadership’s vision of providing a comprehensive legislative and service environment that bolsters the protection of creators and innovators’ rights and supports the establishment of a competitive, knowledge-based economy driven by innovation.

He also noted that cooperation with WIPO will facilitate the acceleration of the adoption of global tools and policies in digital transformation, capacity building, and the integration of knowledge policies, thereby solidifying the UAE’s position as a global hub for the new economy and creative industries.

Furthermore, he remarked that intellectual property is a fundamental enabler of the new knowledge-based economic model in the country, fostering innovation and encouraging entrepreneurship in scientific, technological, and cultural fields. To this end, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism continues its efforts to enhance the intellectual property system in the UAE regularly, in line with the best international practices through partnerships with friendly nations and relevant international organizations, while keeping up with global technological and legislative advancements, in accordance with the objectives of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision to strengthen the UAE’s standing as a global center for the new economy.

In detail, the collaboration agreement was signed by His Excellency Abdulla bin Touk Al Marri and Mr. Daren Tang, the Director General of WIPO. The purpose of this agreement is to foster collaborative efforts and develop the intellectual property environment in the UAE based on global best practices, as well as to share expertise and knowledge in the development of national policies and legislation.

Under the agreement, both parties will work together to support digital transformation, develop joint projects, build institutional and human capacities, and enhance the integration of innovation, education, industry, and intellectual property policies. This will be achieved by leveraging international expertise from WIPO, forming a joint working group to oversee implementation and assess progress, update action plans, and exchange technical reports and information between the two sides. This aims to reinforce the competitiveness of the innovation and creativity environment in the country on both regional and global levels.

This collaboration further affirms the UAE’s position as an important partner in developing an international intellectual property environment, highlighting its leading role in supporting initiatives aimed at building a resilient economy based on innovation and technology, while ensuring the protection of intellectual property rights for creators and inventors across various vital sectors.
