Abu Dhabi to open new Art project in April

TeamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Cultural District will open its doors to the public on April 18. The highly anticipated 17,000-square-meter art project, developed by Tokyo-based art collective teamLab, will take visitors on a multi-sensory journey through vast experiential artworks that engage sight, sound and touch, reported by Gulf News.

Miral Experiences

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, said teamLab is the “ideal partner” to deliver immersive art experiences that push the boundaries of art and technology. “When teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi opens, it will offer a captivating journey that sparks boundless curiosity and imagination in all visitors. At the intersection of art, technology and nature, it will create a world of boundless wonder and creativity. Through these multi-sensory explorations, we are inspiring new generations of innovators, thinkers and creators in Abu Dhabi and beyond,” said Al Mubarak.

The purpose-built structure is operated by Miral Experiences, a subsidiary of Miral, a leading provider of immersive destinations and experiences in Abu Dhabi. The installations are part of teamLab’s “Environmental Phenomena” concept, which was created through a long process of experimentation.

Toshiyuki Inoko, founder of teamLab

Toshiyuki Inoko, founder of teamLab, noted that works of art do not exist in isolation, but are created by the environment, which generates various phenomena that cause the works of art to exist. “Until now, things created by humans have existed through matter, like stone, and have a stable structure in themselves. Unlike such things, the existence of the illustrations in teamLab Phenomena is created by the environment. The environment creates the phenomena, and the environment supports the existence of the structure. Let’s call this existence ecological phenomena.”

TeamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi is a key addition to the Saadiyat Cultural District, which, when completed, will be the largest concentration of cultural and educational institutions in the world. The district is home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat and Berklee Abu Dhabi, and will soon be joined by the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum of Abu Dhabi and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
