The Adnec Group has officially received the “Sustainability Year: Words into Action” badge, acknowledging its substantial achievements backed by data in environmental leadership and sustainable innovation. This recognition came after a nationwide call for organizations in the UAE to present their creative and community-oriented efforts aligned with the objectives of “Sustainability Year 2024.”
This badge is part of an initiative from “Sustainability Year” in the UAE, aimed at continuously promoting sustainable practices across all sectors. The initiative focuses on transforming learning into action in four key areas: green transportation, energy and water conservation, responsible consumption, and sustainable smart agriculture.
Clean Energy
The Adnec Group is committed to implementing comprehensive changes within its operations, which is prominently showcased by the transformation of the Adnec Abu Dhabi center to operate on 100% clean energy. This achievement has been made possible through the adoption of diverse clean energy sources, including solar, wind, and nuclear energy, facilitated by an agreement with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). Additionally, all carbon emissions resulting from electricity consumption are offset through international renewable energy certificates (IRECs) accredited by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, making the center the first and largest of its kind in the region.
The group has updated its air conditioning systems with artificial intelligence technology, which is expected to reduce the center’s annual electricity consumption by approximately 20%, equivalent to around six million kilowatt-hours.
Adnec Group also incorporates waste reduction principles and applies circular economy practices as a central element of its operational strategy, recycling over half of the total waste generated across its various business sectors.
Adnec’s subsidiary, Capital Hospitality, supports this initiative by processing 1,200 kilograms of food waste daily, converting it into compost or soil enhancers. Used cooking oil is transformed into biodiesel. Additionally, the “Terra Tile” flooring, a modular system made entirely from recycled materials in collaboration with Terrax, exemplifies this commitment as it transforms event waste into durable, recyclable flooring.
The group has also worked to enhance community awareness through partnerships with Tawteen and the Red Crescent Authority, donating surplus food and launching awareness campaigns. Moreover, it has strengthened local procurement through a national content program and adopted clear sourcing practices in its supply chain.
Added Value
In 2024, the Adnec Group achieved significant economic and social milestones for Abu Dhabi and the UAE, with a total added value reaching approximately AED 8.56 billion, an increase of over AED 1 billion from the previous year (AED 7.4 billion). The group contributed to generating over 62,000 job opportunities in the country, representing an increase of over 11,000 jobs compared to 2023 (around 51,000 jobs). On a community level, employee volunteer hours surged to nearly 27,000 hours, up from 13,000 hours the previous year, reflecting the group’s commitment to enhancing its positive impact on society.
This recognition underscores the group’s strategy to achieve zero carbon emissions, which includes reducing each employee’s carbon footprint by 25% by 2030.
Furthermore, Adnec Group adds another accomplishment to its sustainability record through a photovoltaic solar energy project planned for implementation on the rooftops of the Adnec Abu Dhabi center. This project is expected to generate over 8.5 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually, contributing to approximately 30% of the center’s electricity needs and reducing carbon emissions by around 6,000 metric tons each year.
