Saed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced that the “Green Charger” initiative has seen a significant increase of 23.6% in electric vehicle charging operations during the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.
Since its launch in 2015 until the end of the first quarter of 2025, DEWA’s “Green Charger” initiative has provided over 39,159 megawatt-hours of electricity for electric vehicle charging in Dubai, contributing to a total travel distance exceeding 195 million kilometers using electric vehicles.
Dubai has experienced a notable rise in the adoption of electric vehicles from 2015 to the present.
As of the end of the first quarter of 2025, the number of electric vehicles in Dubai reached 39,000, reflecting an increase of 5.41% from the first quarter of 2024, demonstrating the successful implementation of the emirate’s strategies for transitioning to environmentally friendly transportation options.
In a recent statement, Al Tayer expressed the authority’s commitment to promoting the shift towards green transportation and achieving climate neutrality by reducing the carbon footprint in the transportation sector. This effort aligns with the UAE’s Climate Neutrality 2050 strategy and Dubai’s Green Mobility Strategy 2030, enhancing the competitiveness of the UAE and Dubai in electric vehicle adoption.
The number of participants in the “Green Charger” initiative has grown from 14 registered users in 2015 to 20,903 users by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
Dubai boasts a sophisticated infrastructure with over 1,100 electric vehicle charging points, which include stations developed by DEWA under the Green Charger initiative as well as stations built by licensed independent charging point operators. Electric vehicles are increasingly popular across the UAE.
A comprehensive survey conducted by the global firm “Toluna” revealed that 73% of residents in the UAE prefer purchasing electric cars, with “Green Charger” stations available around the clock at numerous key locations throughout Dubai.
Customers can easily locate charging stations across Dubai through DEWA’s official website and mobile application, as well as 14 other digital platforms.
DEWA has installed various types of charging stations, including ultra-fast chargers, fast chargers, public chargers, and wall-mounted chargers.
Clients can create a Green Charger account via DEWA’s official website and mobile app or through the interactive voice response system at the customer care center, allowing them to use DEWA’s charging stations within an hour after registering their vehicle. Additionally, all clients—both registered and unregistered in the “Green Charger” initiative—can utilize the service through the “Visitor Feature.”
