In light of World Backup Day, Kaspersky has highlighted common patterns in personal data storage and provided practical tips for enhancing their security.
The findings reveal that Generation Z and Millennials are predominantly shifting towards digital storage, whereas about one-third of individuals aged over 55 still prefer traditional paper copies to keep their information.
A survey conducted by Kaspersky’s market research center showed that the vast majority of users in the UAE rely on digital methods for storing important data.
According to the survey, 92% of participants report digitally storing sensitive information such as identity details, financial data, health records, and photo archives.
When it comes to storage methods, 66% of respondents utilize computers or hard drives, while 43% turn to cloud storage services, and 35% use digital platforms or government services for data preservation. Despite the advantages of digital storage and its ease of access, it is not without challenges.
Physical storage media can be at risk of loss or damage. The company’s experts recommend following the “3-2-1” rule, which entails maintaining three backup copies of data on two different media types, with one copy stored offsite, either in the cloud or at a separate location. They also emphasize the importance of securing sensitive data such as passwords and official documents by using specialized solutions like password managers, which offer a secure and encrypted environment for information storage.
The study indicates that 98% of respondents take steps to protect their data; however, 32% of them still use easy-to-guess passwords, which increases the risk of breaches.
