Dry Docks Secures Contract for Construction of Largest Floating Facility for Natural Gas Liquefaction

Drydocks World, a subsidiary of DP World, has announced its success in securing a contract with Amigo LNG for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the largest floating LNG facility in the world.

This groundbreaking project includes the conversion of two LNG carriers into floating storage units, as well as the construction of two new floating LNG vessels at Drydocks World in Dubai. The integrated facility, comprising four ships, is expected to commence operations in the second half of 2028, with an annual production capacity exceeding 4.2 million tons, making it the largest facility of its kind globally.

Amigo LNG is a joint venture between Epsilon LNG from Texas and the Singapore-based LNG Alliance.

The facility will be located off the coast of Guaymas in Sonora, Mexico, receiving gas supplies from the U.S. Permian Basin. Its strategic location is anticipated to strengthen Mexico’s role in global energy supplies by enabling direct LNG exports to Asia and Latin America. Additionally, its proximity to Asian markets compared to U.S. Gulf Coast LNG facilities will help reduce transportation costs and emissions, opening a new pathway for LNG at a critical time for bolstering global energy security.

On this occasion, Dr. Radu Antolovich, CEO of Drydocks World, stated, “This contract marks a significant milestone for Drydocks World and for Dubai. With our extensive expertise in transforming complex marine facilities and executing large-scale projects, we are setting new global benchmarks for floating LNG solutions. This project further solidifies Dubai’s position as a leading hub for advanced maritime engineering that supports global trade and the transition to clean energy.”

The project will utilize a modular construction strategy, where the facility’s design and construction take place in independent units before being transported and assembled into the final system. This method allows for precise manufacturing and seamless integration of systems, while ensuring the highest quality standards, expediting delivery schedules, reducing environmental impact, and guaranteeing long-term reliable performance.

Dr. Mothu Chizian, CEO of LNG Alliance, remarked, “Through our partnership with Drydocks World to build the world’s largest floating LNG facility, we are ensuring the highest standards of quality, exceptional production capacity, and long-term reliable performance for this critical facility. We are capitalizing on the key advantages of these floating solutions, from accelerated project timelines and thorough testing and pre-commissioning in a controlled environment to realizing significant environmental benefits this approach aims to provide.”

It is worth noting that Drydocks World has completed over 10 major projects for the development and conversion of LNG units and floating storage units for liquefied gas.
