The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced a new initiative called the ‘influencer academy’ aimed at enhancing the appeal of the Emirates to global tourists and businesses. Critics view this move as part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to distract from its human rights violations.
Beginning this month in Dubai, the program spans three months and offers selected participants flight tickets and lodging in a luxurious serviced apartment, as well as a stipend for living expenses during their training.
Participants are expected to share their travel experiences in Dubai while they are enrolled in the program, culminating in a certification from the Dubai College of Tourism. Those who stand out are then presented with opportunities for full-time employment with Beautiful Destinations.
Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, stated that this collaborative initiative with Beautiful Destinations highlights the UAE’s dedication to promoting creativity, innovation, and excellence within the tourism sector. He remarked, “By establishing a dedicated platform for content creators, we intend to enhance Dubai’s international allure and reinforce our status as the premier destination to visit, live, and work in.”
However, detractors of the UAE and its global ambitions have criticized the new initiative as another attempt to obscure the country’s human rights abuses, which include the imprisonment of political opponents and involvement in regional conflicts, such as those in Sudan.
