Ireland and UAE Release Joint Statement After Extraditing Alleged Kinihan Cartel Associate

The Justice Ministers of Ireland and the UAE have released a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to combating organized crime following the extradition of an Irish individual from Dubai.

On May 29, Sean McGovern was detained in Dublin after being extradited from the United Arab Emirates at the request of Irish law enforcement.

The 39-year-old is believed to be a significant figure within Dublin’s Kinahan cartel and was previously under an Interpol Red Notice before his arrest in Dubai in October 2024.

He faces charges including murder and association with a criminal organization.

During a phone conversation, Ireland’s Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan and the UAE’s Justice Minister Abdullah bin Sultan Al Nuaimi discussed the successful operation, which followed the extradition order from the Dubai Court of Cassation.

“This encouraging development serves as further proof of the strong cooperation in criminal justice between the UAE and Ireland and underscores our mutual commitment to bringing to justice those who attempt to evade it,” stated the ministers.

They also praised the efforts of the Dubai Police and An Garda Síochána for their continuous collaboration and dedication to strengthening police-to-police relations in the global fight against organized crime.

Following the extradition, Deputy Garda Commissioner Shawna Coxon remarked: “I would like to highlight that this represents another important milestone in our ongoing work with international law enforcement to disrupt and dismantle transnational organized crime networks.”

She further noted: “This effort has involved extensive discussions among senior garda officers both domestically and internationally, alongside intricate investigative collaboration with our global partners.

“Our network of garda liaison officers in strategic locations abroad plays a crucial role in this work.

“This success could not have been achieved without the support of the Department of Justice, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“I want to extend particular gratitude to the Ministry of Justice at the judicial level in the United Arab Emirates. Our global police cooperation is essential for dismantling organized crime.

“Transnational criminal gangs inflict suffering on communities not only in Ireland but around the globe.

“They engage in activities such as murder, human trafficking, and drug trafficking.

“Addressing these organizations enhances safety not just in Ireland but also in the other nations where they operate.”
