Current Humanitarian Crisis
Sudan is currently experiencing the largest and most rapidly escalating displacement crisis globally, exacerbated by ongoing violence. Over 13 million individuals have been displaced, both within Sudan and in neighboring nations such as Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.
In addition, Sudan is grappling with the most severe humanitarian crisis on record, with nearly 30 million people suffering from critical shortages of food, water, medical supplies, and fuel. Civilians are frequently subjected to indiscriminate bombings, assaults on essential infrastructure like hospitals, and instances of gender-based violence.
Sudanese Refugees
The current U.S. administration is tightening regulations for Sudanese immigrants seeking legal entry and residency in the country. Reports indicate that preparations are underway to implement a new travel ban affecting numerous countries, including Sudan. This proposed ban categorizes Sudan as “red,” effectively prohibiting its citizens from entering the U.S.
A travel ban directed at Sudan would not only hinder Sudanese refugees from accessing the U.S., but it would also prevent families from reuniting through family-based petitions or other avenues for family reunification. Additionally, it would restrict nonimmigrant visa holders from entering the U.S., effectively eliminating all legal pathways for Sudanese citizens.
