Thomas Puzzled by UAE’s Finestre Mistake: “So Many Conspiracy Theories Are Flooding My Mind

How could the Giro d’Italia slip away like that? This question will likely linger in the minds of cycling enthusiasts for a while. It was unexpected for Isaac Del Toro to be a contender for the overall title, but the way he and UAE Team Emirates—XRG squandered a winning opportunity was particularly perplexing. Geraint Thomas and Laurens De Plus were completely puzzled and voiced their dissatisfaction during the podcast, Watts Occurring.
Thomas was incredulous as he watched the events unfold on Saturday. Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz missed their chance for the title on the Colle delle Finestre. “I was frustrated, happy, confused—every emotion at once while watching the stage,” remarked the Welsh cyclist. “You start on the Finestre, and EF leads out like at Mur de Huy. Carapaz makes a massive move, and only Del Toro can stay with him. But Yates ultimately claims the overall victory by a 4-minute margin. What happened in between?!”

De Plus reminisced about the 2016 Giro d’Italia when Steven Kruijswijk lost the pink jersey, and Vincenzo Nibali took control in the final mountain stage. Thomas also recalls losing the Giro two years ago to Primoz Roglic during the last opportunity. “The significant difference for me was that I tried, and Kruijswijk did too. Del Toro and UAE, on the other hand, seemed less engaged. I need to watch a few interviews because it all felt surreal.”

Thomas, like Del Toro, lost the Giro in 2023 on the very last possible day.

Del Toro remained passive: “It’s his race to lose”

Undoubtedly, the young Mexican’s performance is highly commendable, especially considering his role within the team. “Don’t get me wrong: he’s 21 and finished second in his debut Grand Tour (Del Toro participated in the Vuelta a España last year, ed.). That’s a significant achievement. However, his approach was completely different. It felt like something changed overnight.”

At times, the unfolding drama at Finestre was difficult for Thomas to watch. “Del Toro shadowed Carapaz impressively, and when Yates attacked, he didn’t lead. Carapaz rode at the front, which I just couldn’t understand. Let Del Toro take charge; he’s in pink—this is his race to lose. Ultimately, Carapaz slowed down, and Del Toro didn’t even step up. They paused for 30 seconds, allowing Derek Gee to catch up. Then, Carapaz accelerated again. He made the right move, but Del Toro could keep up.”

Thomas feels frustrated with Carapaz and Del Toro: “They were likely the strongest”

When Carapaz couldn’t break away, the chasers conserved their energy. Consequently, Yates stormed ahead and dominated the Giro. However, Carapaz and Del Toro displayed remarkable consistency throughout the race. “They were likely the two strongest riders in the whole competition. Yates deserves his win; he seized the opportunity, but…”

De Plus pointed out Del Toro’s lack of experience, suggesting that at his age, he might not know the best way to ride a Grand Tour. “You can see the contrast with Yates—an experienced cyclist who has completed 10 or 15 Grand Tours.” Nonetheless, Thomas firmly disagreed. “Do you need experience to realize that third place is slipping away? Even my five-year-old son would understand that.”

Thomas unimpressed with UAE: “Let’s talk about brainfarts…

Another significant misstep by UAE was allowing van Aert to ride. Zonneveld expressed frustration about this, and Thomas echoed similar sentiments. “You know van Aert is up front, so it doesn’t make sense to give him too much room, right? I wondered if Del Toro wasn’t strong enough and didn’t want Carapaz to win. Yet, if he goes, he can easily keep pace. I just couldn’t comprehend it. Then they came to a complete halt. My father-in-law could have launched an attack on them, and he’s slow on a bike.”

The Belgian from Visma | Lease a Bike earned much praise, but the former Tour champion struggles to understand the fluctuating views on van Aert. “I’m van Aert’s biggest supporter; I’ve defended him many times. But it frustrates me that people elevate him one week and criticize him the next. Can we maintain some perspective and acknowledge: well done for being at the front? It was clearly a smart tactic.”

In the valley, van Aert surged ahead of his leader, while Del Toro and Carapaz let their gap grow from 2 minutes to an astonishing 5. “Even when that group regained contact, UAE’s teammates were not pushing from the front. I hesitate to suggest it, but all sorts of conspiracy theories are swirling through my mind. Speaking of brainfarts…”
