A man has been taken into custody following the fatal shooting of three women in Ras Al Khaimah, an incident reportedly linked to a road rage altercation.
Authorities received a call regarding the shooting incident, with police arriving on the scene just five minutes later. The identities of the individuals involved have not been disclosed. Initial findings suggest that the conflict arose when one vehicle attempted to overtake another on a narrow roadway. During the confrontation, the suspect purportedly brandished a firearm and opened fire on the three women.
The victims were rushed to a hospital but succumbed to their injuries. The case is now being processed by the prosecutors. The police have not specified the exact location within the emirate where the incident occurred. They urged the public to maintain composure during disputes, stating that anyone who jeopardizes public safety will face legal consequences.
### UAE Gun Regulations
In the United Arab Emirates, individuals are required to obtain a firearm license issued by the authorities. This regulation excludes military personnel, law enforcement officers, and security service members, as indicated on the UAE government’s official site.
Only UAE nationals are eligible to receive permits for gun ownership or carrying. The law stipulates severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines reaching up to AED 100,000 (approximately $27,230), for anyone found carrying firearms or ammunition without proper licensing.
While incidents of gunfire are quite infrequent in the Emirates, there have been previous occurrences. In 2019, a man in Al Ain perished after discharging his weapon at police officers who had ordered him to stop while he was driving recklessly during the early morning hours. The officers pursued him, but upon his refusal to comply, they discharged two warning shots in line with the legal authority granted to them.
The unidentified driver subsequently fired at the police before colliding with their vehicle, which caused his own car to overturn. He sustained serious injuries and later died at the hospital’s intensive care unit, as reported at that time.
In a notable case from 2012, a Yemeni man named Fahad Abdullah and Emirati Mohammed Khamis were sentenced to life imprisonment for firing at a police patrol in Baniyas. They were caught in an undercover operation while attempting to sell 20 kilograms of hashish and opened fire upon realizing they were being ambushed, injuring two officers. Abdullah was apprehended at the scene, while Khamis was arrested at the UAE border while attempting to flee to Yemen. In addition to their sentences, they were also ordered to pay compensation to the injured officers.
