The Tourism Sector in the UAE Sees Growing Dependence on Digital Services
Qutaiba Al Ali, founder and CEO of “The Digital Hotelier,” stated that the UAE has made significant strides in integrating technology within the hospitality sector. He noted that the country was among the pioneers in establishing advanced regulatory frameworks for vacation rentals and implementing smart entry systems to ensure guest safety and uphold the highest security standards.
He emphasized that embracing technology is not merely a response to global trends but a practical measure to enhance guest experiences and ensure their safety. Furthermore, this aligns with the country’s goals for green tourism and environmental sustainability. The UAE’s hospitality sector has actively supported the emergence and establishment of specialized tech companies catering to this industry.
He highlighted that the hotel industry is currently expanding its adoption of sustainability practices, with over 150 hotels achieving sustainable tourism certification. This growth is attributed to technology initiatives focused on energy efficiency and emissions reduction, along with accurate carbon footprint measurement tools that have been in place for years.
Service Design
Stacy Samuel, Chief Technology Officer at “Eshraq Hospitality,” remarked that technology is now central to the hospitality sector, impacting how services are designed, how teams operate, and guest experiences at every touchpoint. He pointed out that cloud platforms, AI-driven customization solutions, touchless check-in procedures, and mobile services are all factors that elevate guest expectations regarding speed, convenience, and reliability.
He affirmed that successful hotels are those that integrate data, processes, and personnel around a clear digital vision. Samuel added that the UAE is a global leader in this domain, highlighting that Dubai has established a strong foundation through its digital infrastructure, 5G networks, and paperless government services, which support secure data exchange, provide real-time insights into the tourism sector, and promote sustainable smart city practices.
The World Tourism Organization confirmed that the ongoing evolution of global travel patterns and consumer expectations has led to increased demand for innovative solutions that can revolutionize the way destinations are experienced and interacted with.
According to the organization, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are highlighted as catalysts for change, creating unprecedented opportunities to reimagine the tourism landscape. The integration of AI represents a significant shift in how destinations are understood and managed.
A study conducted by researchers from the University of Malaga in Spain and published in the scientific platform “MDPI” at the end of 2024 indicated that AI serves as a strategic tool that enables smart tourism destinations to enhance data and sales management, tailor offers, mitigate forecasting errors, rationalize resources, improve service quality, stimulate local investment, and respond dynamically to the changing needs of tourists and residents.
Notably, the contribution of the tourism and travel sector to the UAE’s GDP rose during 2024 to 257.3 billion dirhams, representing 13% of the national economy, according to a report from the World Travel and Tourism Council.
The report projected that international tourist spending would increase by 5.2% this year, reaching 228.5 billion dirhams, while local tourist spending would rise by 4.3%, reaching 60 billion dirhams.
