UAE Prepares to Launch Its First Inter-Emirate Passenger Railway

The United Arab Emirates is entering a new chapter in its transportation history with the upcoming launch of its first nationwide passenger rail service. The new railway will connect Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Fujairah, creating a faster and more efficient travel network while strengthening economic integration between the country’s major emirates.

The inauguration of the Mohamed bin Zayed City railway station in Abu Dhabi marks a major milestone in the project. The station is one of the first completed passenger terminals and forms part of the infrastructure developed ahead of the official launch of commercial rail operations.

Beyond improving mobility, the railway is expected to support long-term urban development, increase property values around transport hubs, and enhance the attractiveness of key investment destinations across the UAE.

Passenger Services Will Begin with the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah Route

Regular passenger operations are scheduled to begin on June 30, with the initial phase connecting Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. The route will provide residents and visitors with a new alternative to road travel, significantly reducing journey times while offering a comfortable, high-speed travel experience.

Travel between the two emirates will take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, making the railway a competitive option for both daily commuters and business travelers.

The wider passenger network will continue to expand over the following months. Three additional stations are expected to open in phases, with the full rollout planned to be completed by March 30, 2027. Once operational, the expanded network will create seamless connections between several of the UAE’s largest urban centers.

Modern Rolling Stock and International Expertise

Passenger services will be operated by a joint venture established between Etihad Rail, the UAE’s national railway developer and operator, and Keolis, the French transportation company with extensive experience managing public transit systems around the world.

The railway will initially use 13 modern passenger trains manufactured by Spanish rolling stock producer CAF. Designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h, the trains will combine efficiency with passenger comfort while supporting the country’s vision of sustainable transportation.

Each train will accommodate up to 400 passengers, offering spacious seating, modern onboard amenities, and service standards designed to meet the expectations of both residents and international visitors.

The introduction of high-speed rail is expected to reduce highway congestion, improve regional connectivity, and encourage greater use of environmentally friendly public transportation across the Emirates.

Affordable Fares Could Boost Regional Mobility and Investment

Ticket prices have been positioned to appeal to a broad range of travelers. A one-way journey between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah will start from AED 55 (approximately US$15) for Comfort Class, while Premium Class tickets will begin at AED 120 (around US$33).

Competitive pricing is expected to encourage widespread adoption of rail travel, particularly among commuters, tourists, and business professionals seeking a faster alternative to driving.

From a real estate perspective, improved transportation infrastructure often acts as a catalyst for residential and commercial development. Enhanced accessibility can increase demand for housing, stimulate new business activity, and strengthen investment opportunities in districts located near railway stations.

The passenger railway also represents another step in the UAE’s long-term strategy to diversify its economy through infrastructure investment, sustainable mobility, and smart urban planning. Together with ongoing expansions in aviation, ports, and logistics, the project reinforces the country’s position as one of the Middle East’s leading destinations for investment, tourism, and real estate development.
