The UAE women’s cricket team has been granted ODI status for the cycle of 2025-29, taking the place of the USA among the 16 teams recognized with ICC ODI status, as of May 12. The updated list includes five Associate members: Thailand, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea (PNG), and Scotland maintained their positions while the UAE joins as a new member.
Thailand and Scotland achieved their ODI status due to their stellar performances in the recent women’s ODI World Cup qualifiers. PNG and the Netherlands preserved their status based on their T20I rankings, being 13th and 15th, respectively.
At the World Cup qualifiers held in Pakistan this month, Scotland showcased an impressive performance, securing wins against West Indies and Thailand while finishing fourth in the six-team competition. Conversely, Thailand faced challenges, losing all their matches.
Pakistan and Bangladesh advanced to the World Cup through this tournament, which India will host later this year. Pakistan will play their matches at a neutral location instead of traveling to India.
The UAE secured its ODI status as the next highest-ranked Associate team, holding the 16th position in the T20I rankings during the latest annual review. To retain or acquire an ODI ranking, teams must complete a minimum of eight ODIs over a span of three to four years.
Australia continues to lead the rankings with 299 rating points, widening the gap over second-placed England (279) from 18 to 20 points following the recent updates.
Meanwhile, the USA is competing in a series against Zimbabwe, having lost the T20I series 2-1 but managed to win the first ODI by seven wickets on Thursday. The series will conclude with the final ODI on Saturday.
The UAE, for its part, is currently involved in a quadrangular T20I series taking place in Bangkok, competing against Thailand, Hong Kong, and Kuwait.
