Uzbekistan has successfully qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time in their history, achieving this milestone after eight attempts. This significant achievement came following a 0-0 draw against the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
Goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov was pivotal in this match, making three crucial saves in the second half, which helped Uzbekistan secure the vital point needed to advance from Asian Group A, alongside Iran, who had already booked their place in the finals.
Abbosbek Fayzullaev nearly scored for Uzbekistan with a header that hit the crossbar in the 54th minute. However, it was Yusupov’s impressive performance that kept the Emirati side, managed by Cosmin Olaroiu, at bay as they sought a victory to keep their automatic qualification hopes alive.
As a result of the draw, the UAE will proceed to the fourth round of qualifying, having ensured a finish in either third or fourth place in Group A.
Meanwhile, Indonesia has secured its spot in the World Cup preliminary rounds with a narrow 1-0 victory over China, thereby eliminating the qualification aspirations of Branko Ivankovic’s team.
A penalty by Ole Romeny in the 45th minute was the decisive moment in Jakarta, allowing Indonesia to finish in either third or fourth place in Group C, thus moving on to the next phase, scheduled for October.
