US President Trump Visits UAE Amid Cultural Celebration
US President Donald Trump arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday as part of his Middle East tour, following his stop in Qatar. He was welcomed by UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and his arrival in Abu Dhabi featured a distinctive cultural celebration that has drawn significant attention on social media.
Upon reaching Qasr Al Watan, the UAE Presidential Palace, Trump was greeted with an Al-Ayyala performance, a traditional cultural dance originating from Oman and the UAE, characterized by women tossing their hair back and forth.
A video shared on social media by White House aide Margo Martin showcased Trump observing a group of women who were synchronously flipping their hair in rhythm with traditional drums and chants. The president appeared intrigued as he watched the dancers, accompanied by men wielding ceremonial swords.
“The welcome ceremony in the UAE continues!” Martin posted alongside the clip.
The video has since accumulated over 5.3 million views, prompting comments from users curious about the cultural significance of the hair tossing. One user asked, “Can someone explain the hair tossing by the females?” while another inquired, “What does the hair/head swing symbolize?”
As explained by UNESCO, the Al-Ayyala performance integrates poetry, drumming, and dance to recreate a battle scenario. Participants form a line, with the girls in traditional attire swinging their long hair. Meanwhile, two rows of approximately twenty men face off, holding thin bamboo sticks to represent spears or swords.
This dance is traditionally performed at weddings and various celebrations in Oman and the UAE, featuring participants from a range of backgrounds and ages. The lead performer is typically a role passed down through generations, responsible for training others in the art. Al-Ayyala promotes inclusivity, embracing all ages, genders, and social classes.
Trump’s Middle East Tour Concludes in UAE
The UAE visit marks the final leg of Trump’s Middle East tour, which included visits to Qatar and Saudi Arabia earlier this week. In each country, he was met with elaborate displays of hospitality.
In Saudi Arabia, he was escorted by six fighter jets upon his arrival on Air Force One. Similarly, in Qatar, Trump received a fighter jet escort, and his motorcade was welcomed by a procession of camels.
According to reports, Trump has successfully secured over $1 trillion in economic investment pledges from Gulf nations during this trip.
