Edge Group, a leading global company in advanced technology and defense, has officially launched the first of its kind (FOC) corvette, named “NRA Ekuikui II,” which is part of a strategic contract worth €1 billion for the Angolan navy.
The ceremony took place in Cherbourg, France, with CMN Naval responsible for the design and construction of the vessel. CMN is a prestigious global group specializing in the design and engineering of military and commercial vessels, as well as luxury yachts.
Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Edge Group, has delivered six fast interceptor boats measuring 12 meters, in addition to one out of five 16-meter interceptor boats. These vessels are essential components of the Angolan navy’s modern fleet, enhancing their surveillance capabilities and national security objectives.
David Masi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding, stated that through close collaboration with CMN and international partners, significant milestones have been achieved for the Angolan navy at an accelerated pace. Just two years after signing the contract, the first 71-meter corvette has been launched, and advanced interceptor boats have been delivered, with two more vessels to follow—one built by CMN and the other at Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding after technology transfer. This momentum reflects the strength of their partnership and shared commitment to enhancing maritime security in Angola.
Furthermore, Anavia, another subsidiary of Edge Group, is integrating the unmanned naval helicopter “HT100 NAVAL,” designed in Switzerland, into the “BR71 MK II Combattante” corvette. Each corvette will be equipped with two unmanned aerial systems of the “HT100 NAVAL” model, featuring electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, fully integrated with the ship’s combat management systems.
Eshan Sehgal, co-founder and CEO of Anavia, remarked that they are providing the Angolan navy with a potent capability enhancer for maritime surveillance, leveraging the advanced performance and reliability of the “HT100” system. This also includes a control station designed specifically for maritime operational needs, alongside comprehensive logistical support services and training programs to ensure optimal operational readiness.
Currently, the second “BR71 MK II Combattante” corvette is under construction at Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding facilities, while the third vessel is being built in Cherbourg, France.
Construction of the third ship continues in Cherbourg as part of a comprehensive program that distributes production phases between the UAE and France to ensure the highest quality standards and expedite delivery timelines.
The launch of the first vessel in this class marks a significant milestone in the growing security partnership between Angola and the UAE. Last October, Edge Group signed a letter of intent with the Angolan Ministry of Interior to initiate a comprehensive border security program.
