The Competition Management from the Ministry of Economy and Tourism recently held a coordination meeting with the Competition Protection and Antitrust Centre from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion in Oman. The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen collaborative efforts and share expertise in supporting competition and promoting fair business practices across various economic and technologically advanced sectors.
During the discussions, both parties concentrated on monitoring anticompetitive behaviors in digital markets and enhancing legal enforcement tools to ensure transparent and equitable business environments, as well as encouraging increased private sector investments. They also underscored the importance of exchanging technical knowledge and enhancing human capacities, which will bolster the positions of both countries in regional and international arenas related to competitive policies.
The meeting included a presentation of the UAE’s experience in regulating competition within the Emirati market, particularly regarding e-commerce and related platforms, alongside complaint handling procedures in accordance with Federal Law No. 36 of 2023 on Competition Regulation.
Mohammed Sultan Al Junaidi, Director of the Competition Administration at the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, emphasized that strengthening collaboration with Oman’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry reflects both nations’ commitment to developing a marketplace based on fair competition. He noted the importance of adopting world-class legislation and standards and expressed the Ministry’s eagerness to expand coordination with Oman to include joint studies and awareness programs for the private sector.
On the other hand, a representative from the Oman Competition Protection and Antitrust Centre highlighted that enhancing partnerships with the UAE’s Ministry of Economy and Tourism is a significant move to leverage the Emirati experience in competition regulation and fair trade, thus elevating the competition framework at both the bilateral and Gulf Cooperation Council levels. At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to foster collaboration going forward, which includes developing a work plan for technical workshops focused on the digital platform economy and exchanging data and expertise to support cross-border studies and research.
