The United Arab Emirates participated in the 116th session of the Arab Economic and Social Council, which took place at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo from August 31 to September 3, 2025. The meeting was chaired by Tunisia and attended by delegations from member states. The discussions focused on enhancing Arab cooperation in economic and social fields, supporting sustainable development plans, and coordinating efforts on regional and international priorities.
Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, who led the UAE delegation, emphasized that the UAE is committed to actively contributing to the development and implementation of economic and social initiatives that promote the integration of Arab economies and enhance the well-being of Arab communities. He noted that this session represents an important opportunity to align positions and collaborate towards achieving comprehensive development in the Arab region.
Digital Transformation
He pointed out that the topics on the agenda reflect the region’s priorities in light of international changes, particularly in areas such as facilitating intra-Arab trade, enhancing food and water security, improving the business and investment environment, supporting digital transformation, and empowering youth and women to achieve overall development in Arab societies.
Al Saleh stated, “The UAE places significant importance on the development of Arab organizations, utilizing them as centers of expertise that provide member states with specialized knowledge and services. This initiative stems from a decision made in the previous council session to form a team of specialized experts based on a proposal put forward by the UAE, aimed at developing effective plans to enhance the efficiency of Arab organizations and their capacity to support development priorities and joint Arab efforts.”
Logistic Connectivity
In detail, the council reviewed reports on the implementation of decisions from previous Arab summits and sessions. They discussed progress made in common economic and social files, the realization of priority projects and initiatives, and the expansion of partnerships between Arab organizations and international and regional bodies.
On the economic front, the council examined the plan for the upcoming phase of Arab economic cooperation, including the removal of customs barriers, completing the requirements for the Arab Customs Union, and activating the Greater Arab Free Trade Area. Additionally, the council explored ways to enhance transportation networks and logistical connectivity among Arab countries and to support entrepreneurship activities through joint financial initiatives and training programs.
On the social side, the council presented various initiatives aimed at supporting public health programs, expanding educational initiatives that focus on developing future skills, and fostering cultural and media cooperation between member states to strengthen the roles of women and youth in the labor market. Furthermore, the Arab strategic committee discussed empowering persons with disabilities in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
