Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi, the Minister of State for Foreign Trade of the UAE, recently met with Hendrik Josef Wüst, the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. During their discussions, both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing trade relations and collaborating in vital sectors such as technology, advanced manufacturing, and the green economy.
North Rhine-Westphalia is recognized as Germany’s economic engine, housing 37 of the nation’s leading 100 companies. The region achieved a GDP of $990 billion in 2024, representing 20% of Germany’s total economic output. Traditionally known for its industrial base, North Rhine-Westphalia is now shifting its focus towards digital technologies, artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, and sustainability. The region is actively involved in research on water management and agricultural technology innovations.
The alignment between North Rhine-Westphalia and the UAE is evident in their developing relationship, including UAE investments in the ammonia value chain in the region and initiatives surrounding hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.
In 2024, the non-oil trade between the UAE and Germany, the world’s third-largest economy, reached $13.8 billion, marking a 5.4% increase from the previous year. Furthermore, the UAE has committed over $1.2 billion in investments across various projects in Germany. The UAE also declared plans to initiate discussions on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union, with Germany being its largest economy.
Al Zeyoudi noted that the discussion with Wüst underscored the strengths of both regions and laid out a path for future collaboration in critical sectors. He stated, “The UAE has enjoyed a longstanding and fruitful relationship with Germany, and North Rhine-Westphalia, with its industrial legacy and progressive outlook, plays a crucial role in this partnership. From digital transformation to energy transition and environmental sustainability, there are numerous opportunities for cooperation and investment. Our free trade network also facilitates seamless access for the region’s industrial production to essential markets in Asia and Africa. The UAE continues to be an open and inviting business environment for North Rhine-Westphalia companies looking to grow in the Middle East and contribute to our industrial and innovation landscape. Today’s meeting, along with the following business roundtable, will aid in establishing networks that foster this collaboration, and we are dedicated to supporting the flow of trade and investment in the upcoming months and years.
