The company “Tabreed” has released its annual sustainability achievements report for 2024, showcasing significant advancements in enhancing energy efficiency across its operations through automation and artificial intelligence technologies. The establishment of a central control center has been instrumental in seamlessly integrating AI and cloud services. Additionally, Tabreed has successfully implemented phase three of its “Taseel” program at 35 sites, transitioning to fully smart systems. The goal is to achieve an extra savings of over 223 million kilowatt-hours by 2034. This initiative has led to a reduction of more than 1.58 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the emissions produced by approximately 343,000 vehicles. Furthermore, Tabreed has managed to save 2.64 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is sufficient to power more than 150,000 homes annually.
In this context, Antonio Di Sica, Chief Operating Officer, emphasized that Tabreed’s achievements represent a significant contribution to the nation’s emission reduction efforts. He highlighted that the company has become the first district cooling company worldwide to receive the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certification from Verra, awarded to the “SeaWorld Abu Dhabi” station after a year of monitoring and assessment. This certification allows the company to generate and sell carbon credits, thereby enhancing the role of district cooling as an innovative financing tool in climate action.
The report also outlined several notable accomplishments by Tabreed in the region, utilizing cutting-edge scientific developments in the energy sector. For instance, the company introduced nanofluids, termed “Maxwell,” for the first time in its operations to enhance heat transfer in chilled water, resulting in a 15% increase in cooling efficiency. Furthermore, Tabreed incorporated photovoltaic solar panels into its energy mix, with a capacity of approximately 2 megawatts, to power thermal storage infrastructure and chilled water pumps at two district cooling stations. In a similar vein, the company launched the first geothermal district cooling station (G2COOL) in Masdar City, which has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by about 1,100 tons annually in the city. This station has also been awarded the gold prize in the “Renewable Energy Project” category at the Asian Energy Awards.
