Eric Makirr, the global purchasing and trade executive at the Watches of Switzerland Group, has decided to leave the stagnant market of the UK and relocate to Dubai with his family, as reported by Watch Pro.
In what can be viewed as a farewell message to the struggling UK market on LinkedIn, Makirr expressed that Dubai represents a land of opportunities.
He noted that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are not only experiencing growth but are also evolving rapidly, entering the period between 2025 and 2030 with a clear vision.
This move aligns Makirr with an increasing trend of talent migration from the UK to Dubai.
Currently, there are approximately 240,000 British expatriates residing in Dubai, with over 5,000 British companies operating within the emirate.
Makirr pointed out several trends, describing Dubai as undergoing a population boom with a growing base of high-net-worth individuals, a younger clientele, and an expanding middle class with high aspirations.
Furthermore, he highlighted strong government support and encouragement for new ventures, alongside an enthusiasm for innovation and fresh brands.
Makirr stated, “Following an exceptional quarterly performance with the Watches of Switzerland Group, it is time for me to say goodbye as I transition to Dubai with my family. I leave feeling inspired, grateful, and excited for what lies ahead for both the group and myself in the UAE.”
Although Makirr did not disclose his specific plans for work in Dubai, he might join the growing number of entrepreneurs establishing businesses in the city.
According to MENA Markets, more than 2,500 new British companies were registered in 2024 alone, and this number is projected to reach 15,000 registered companies over the next decade.
The Henley & Partners organization estimates that around 9,800 millionaires moved to Dubai in 2025, positioning it as the world’s leading destination for affluent migrants.
Makirr is considered a global nomad, having spent 15 years in Hong Kong working in travel retail and luxury jewelry and watches at DFS Group, which specializes in duty-free sales.
He also spent four additional years in Belgium as the manager of Chipyo, a global electronics company.
In 2023, Makirr took over the purchasing responsibilities at the Watches of Switzerland Group, succeeding the veteran team of Mark Tolson and Fai Soutiry.
Joining him in 2024 was Kelly Best, who spent 20 years as the lead watch buyer at Cinit Jewelers and continues to serve at Watches of Switzerland.
