Suhail Al-Mazrouei: Current Installed Capacity of Renewable Energy in the UAE Reaches 7.7 Gigawatts

His Excellency Suhail Mohamed Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, has reaffirmed the United Arab Emirates’ commitment to solidifying its global position in sustainable energy. This effort is driven by a comprehensive national vision and strategic investments that facilitate a shift towards clean and renewable energy sources.

During his remarks at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026, he noted that the country’s installed renewable energy capacity has now surpassed 7.7 gigawatts, with ongoing projects set to elevate this total to over 23 gigawatts by 2031. This reflects a clear acceleration in the transition of the national energy system.

Al Mazrouei also highlighted that national investments in the renewable and clean energy sector have exceeded 190 billion dirhams, showcasing the government’s strong confidence in this vital sector as a key driver of sustainable development and low-emission economic growth.

Moreover, he pointed out that the UAE has raised its national target for electricity generation from clean sources to 35% by 2031, alongside the integration of the National Hydrogen Strategy 2050 into the comprehensive planning framework of the energy sector, enhancing the country’s preparations for a low-carbon energy future.

He indicated that the installed renewable energy capacity in the UAE has grown by 117% between 2022 and 2025, reflecting the effectiveness of national policies and the rapid execution of strategic projects aimed at constructing a more sustainable and efficient energy system.

Additionally, Al Mazrouei emphasized that national energy consumption efficiency programs, particularly the National Demand Side Management Program launched in 2020, have contributed to a reduction of over 14.8 million tons of carbon emissions and achieved financial savings exceeding two billion dollars over five years. This is part of a national trajectory aimed at reducing energy consumption by 43% and water consumption by 50% by 2050.

He reiterated that the UAE continues its efforts to achieve the sustainability goals for the energy sector over the next fifty years, diversify its sources, and accelerate the transition to clean energy. He noted that the country stands as the fastest-growing market for clean and renewable energy in the region.

Al Mazrouei affirmed that the UAE aims for a carbon-free future by enhancing leading technologies and developing modern innovations to serve the energy sector. This includes significant efforts in making hydrogen a reliable global energy source, leveraging its traditional hydrogen production capabilities and natural resources, as well as technological strengths to support this strategic direction.
