Source Aims to Establish Agreement for Renewable Energy Development in Montenegro

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, known as “Masdar,” a global leader in clean energy, announced yesterday the signing of an agreement with Montenegro’s national electricity company to explore collaborative opportunities for the development of large-scale renewable energy projects in Montenegro.

The agreement was finalized during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026, with notable attendees including His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmad Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, as well as Milojko Spajić, Prime Minister of the Republic of Montenegro, and Admir Samhanović, Minister of Energy and Mining in Montenegro, alongside prominent representatives from both parties.

Under the agreement, Masdar and the national electricity company will examine potential avenues for the development, construction, ownership, and operation of clean energy projects utilizing various technologies, such as photovoltaic solar power, wind energy, hydropower, independent energy storage systems, and hybrid solutions.

This partnership aims to meet Montenegro’s local energy needs while enabling the export of electricity from renewable sources to Balkan and Southeast European nations. This includes leveraging the existing underwater cable connection between Montenegro and Italy.

The collaboration combines the national electricity company’s efforts and leadership in energy production in Montenegro with Masdar’s international expertise in renewable energy project development.

The two companies are striving through this partnership to accelerate efforts to achieve energy security in Montenegro and contribute to the development of the energy sector across Europe. Admir Samhanović, the Minister of Energy and Mining of Montenegro, remarked:

“These strategic partnerships enhance energy security, create new job opportunities, and support developmental initiatives, while also modernizing our energy sector. By investing in renewable energy sources, Montenegro is gradually moving away from coal and transitioning to clean energy, which represents a sustainable solution for future generations. Our goal today is to establish a stable energy system and adopt responsible policies for a better tomorrow.”

For his part, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, stated: “This type of partnership highlights the importance of collective efforts to bring about a transformative shift in the global energy sector while also enhancing energy security and economic resilience. This agreement embodies Masdar’s ambitious plans to expand into strategic markets that have competitive advantages and broad long-term growth prospects.”
