DB World Handles 10 Million Containers at Brazil’s Santos Port

DP World has solidified its position as a major player in trade across Latin America, having surpassed 10 million TEUs at its Santos terminal in Brazil since commencing operations in 2013, according to official data.

Over the past decade, the company has invested more than 2 billion dirhams in a series of strategic initiatives, which have included expanding the terminal’s capacity, upgrading infrastructure, modernizing equipment and technology, and extending berths. Additionally, DP World has implemented innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions, enhancing the port’s ability to accommodate the largest vessels and improving operational efficiency, positioning the terminal as a model for environmental sustainability.

These investments have also fostered a work environment that generates over 2,200 direct jobs in Brazil, thereby bolstering the local economy and revitalizing surrounding communities.

Recently, DP World has expanded into logistics services by launching a new terminal for grains and fertilizers in collaboration with the railway operator Rumo, with a capacity of 12.5 million tons per year, supporting the agricultural sector in the country.

The company has also opened five new offices in major Brazilian cities to strengthen its shipping and integrated logistics network while achieving over 1,000 consecutive days of work without incidents for its contracted logistics teams.

In March 2024, the port’s capacity was increased to 1.7 million TEUs annually through investments that included the purchase of advanced equipment and a 190-meter berth extension to simultaneously accommodate two Q-Max class vessels.

Furthermore, plans are underway to electrify 22 gantry cranes to reduce diesel consumption by 60% and lower carbon emissions.

In 2025, DP World announced a strategic eight-year partnership with Maersk, coinciding with a record achievement of 1.25 million TEUs in 2024, marking a 14% increase from the previous year.
