Emirati “GSU” Joins Major Solar Energy Project in Egypt

The Emirati energy company Global South Utilities (GSU) has partnered with Egyptian firm AH, Chinese company GA Solar, and Bahraini Infinity Capital to launch the project “Atom Solar Egypt.” This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive industrial complex for the production of solar cells and panels, with a total investment of $220 million (approximately 810 million AED).

According to Global South Utilities, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi-based Resources Investment Group, this project will lay the foundation for one of the largest renewable energy industrial hubs in the Middle East and Africa. It illustrates the UAE’s leadership in promoting the transition towards a green economy at both regional and global levels. The complex, which will be constructed in the Sokhna industrial zone under the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, will span an area of 200,000 square meters and include a solar cell manufacturing plant with a capacity of 2 gigawatts for international export, along with a solar panel factory of the same capacity to serve Egypt and the wider region’s needs, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of clean energy.

This venture underscores the UAE’s pivotal role in shaping the future of renewable energy in the region and reflects its vision to launch groundbreaking investment initiatives that support Egypt’s Vision 2030, opening new avenues for regional industrial and economic collaboration. The project’s implementation is expected to take three years, from construction to full operation, creating over 800 direct job opportunities, while gradually increasing reliance on locally produced materials such as aluminum and glass, thereby supporting the national industry.

Ali Al-Shamri, Managing Director and CEO of Global South Utilities, stated, “This regional-global collaboration exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its impactful investments in clean energy, not only as a driver of economic development but also as a means to empower communities and build a sustainable future. Our project in Egypt serves as a model for Arab-Asian integration in the solar energy sector and represents a significant step towards localizing green technology and developing local competencies in Global South countries.”

The contract signing was witnessed by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and included attendance from Kamal al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, and Walid Jamal El Din, Head of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

The contract was signed by Ali Al-Shamri from Global South Utilities, Tsao Kui, Managing Director and Board Member of Teda, and Ahmed Abou Hashima, Chairman of AH for Industrial Management and one of the founders of Atom Solar Egypt. Global South Utilities specializes in developing sustainable infrastructure in Global South countries and is owned by Resources Investment, an investment firm headquartered in Abu Dhabi.

With its headquarters in the UAE, the company has expanded its operations across various regions in Africa and Asia, focusing on developing and operating solar and wind energy systems, as well as hybrid solutions in collaboration with governments, local communities, and investors to provide low-emission, integrated solutions that meet the essential needs of communities.
