Abu Dhabi Ports Adopts Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication Services for Its International Operations

Abu Dhabi Ports Group has announced its initiative to implement low Earth orbit satellite communication services across its fleet of vessels and throughout its global operational facilities.

This new service marks a significant advancement in the group’s digital transformation journey. It will provide ships with real-time data, ensuring consistent and reliable communications with ports and terminals, enhancing operational efficiency, and achieving fuel consumption savings.

The project commenced this month, following the signing of agreements with several leading low Earth orbit satellite service providers worldwide.

Mohamed Gamal El-Din, Chief Information Officer of Abu Dhabi Ports Group, stated that low Earth orbit satellite communication is a fundamental component for unleashing the potential of the group’s technological ecosystem. He highlighted that through high-speed, low-latency communications, the group can offer numerous advanced artificial intelligence applications, including predictive maintenance, optimized maritime routes, and real-time cargo tracking.

He further explained that this initiative is not just about high-speed connectivity; it is also about establishing a smart, flexible infrastructure that ensures business continuity even in remote locations. By integrating these services with IoT-supported sensors, smart port platforms, and AI analytics, the group is poised to create a fully interconnected supply chain, providing its clients and partners with unprecedented visibility and control across operations.

The first phase of implementation will cover many vessels in the group’s fleet, which consists of 270 ships. The low Earth orbit satellite communication services will enable high-speed, low-latency connectivity, ensuring real-time ship tracking, predictive maintenance operations, and more effective navigation route optimization.

This infrastructure, supported by these communication services, will serve as a vital backbone for AI applications in the maritime sector, including smarter voyage planning, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced safety monitoring, unlocking new levels of operational efficiency that were previously constrained by traditional communication methods.

On the port side, the implementation will extend to the group’s network of 34 terminals located in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Southwest Asia.

This cutting-edge technology will provide uninterrupted communications and ensure business continuity, particularly in remote areas and during complex operations, as well as enhance cargo and shipment monitoring, coordinate emergency response efforts, and improve the reliability of services provided.

This initiative is part of the group’s efforts to accelerate its digital transformation, including smart port platforms, integrated supply chain systems, and IoT applications.

By primarily relying on low Earth orbit satellite communication services, these systems will deliver detailed, real-time insights and advanced automation levels across the group’s global operations.

With the adoption of low Earth orbit satellite communication services, Abu Dhabi Ports Group affirms its global leadership role in digital innovation and sustainable growth in the maritime sector, continuing to invest in advanced technologies and strategic partnerships to deliver cutting-edge solutions that provide real value to its clients and partners worldwide.
