Dubai International Leads Global Airports in December with 11 Million Seats Registered

For the second consecutive month, Dubai International Airport has claimed the top spot as the busiest airport globally, surpassing the American counterpart Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson in terms of total seating capacity for both international and domestic flights. In December, it reported approximately 5.49 million scheduled seats (around 10.98 million in both directions), according to a monthly report from the international data provider OAG.

According to the figures, Dubai International’s total seating capacity for 2025 exceeded 62.41 million scheduled seats (124.8 million in both directions), which is an increase from last year’s 60 million scheduled seats (120 million in both directions).

The international report indicated that in December 2025, Dubai International Airport outperformed Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to emerge as the world’s busiest airport with 5.49 million seats, marking a 4% increase compared to November, and 287,000 seats ahead of Atlanta, which ranked second with approximately 5.2 million seats.

The data showed that Tokyo’s airport ranked third with a total of about 4.67 million seats, followed by Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport at 4.43 million seats, and London Heathrow at around 4.34 million seats. Shanghai Pudong International Airport secured the sixth position with about 4.31 million seats, while Delhi’s airport came seventh with around 4.3 million seats. Dallas Airport reported 4.29 million seats, Istanbul Airport had about 4.22 million, and Chicago O’Hare rounded out the top ten with 4.1 million seats.

Dubai International also held the first place in seating capacity for international flights only, consistently demonstrating strong performance in December.

For years, Dubai International has led in international flight capacity, but it has recently topped the overall index for total capacity on both international and domestic flights for the second consecutive month this year. It is worth noting that air transport at Dubai International primarily focuses on international travel, indicating the substantial growth the airport continues to experience as the largest transit hub in the world.

This ongoing success of Dubai International reflects its significant operational capabilities and continuous investment in infrastructure and smart services, which have enhanced efficiency and reduced wait times, making it an attractive destination for both global airlines and travelers. Additionally, the airport has benefitted from the accelerated growth in travel across the UAE this year, driven by a resurgence in tourism and expansion of national carriers like Emirates and flydubai, along with Dubai’s strategic location at the crossroads between East and West.

Experts suggest that Dubai International’s top position in total airport capacity, despite its heavy reliance on international traffic, highlights a unique competitive advantage compared to major airports that significantly depend on domestic flights to boost their statistics.

Looking ahead, the airport is expected to further strengthen its global standing in 2026 with announcements of new expansion plans and additional capacity enhancements, aligning with Dubai’s strategy to reinforce its status as a premier aviation and travel hub globally, particularly with the continued rise in international visitor numbers and the expansion of global airlines offering more services through the airport.
