Artificial Intelligence and Empowering Skills Drive Microsoft’s Expansion in the UAE

Microsoft is continuing to strengthen its presence in the United Arab Emirates by launching and implementing various strategic projects and investments aimed at positioning the country as a global hub for artificial intelligence and digital transformation. This effort supports the UAE’s journey towards building a diverse and sustainable knowledge-based economy.

This initiative is part of a significant investment plan by Microsoft, which spans from 2023 to 2029 and amounts to a total of $15.2 billion. This is one of the largest investment commitments the company has made in the region, focusing on three main areas: technology, trust, and talent development. The objective is to expedite digital innovation, enhance cloud infrastructure, and equip the national workforce with advanced skills in artificial intelligence.

Amr Kamel, the General Manager of Microsoft UAE, stated that the company’s investments reflect a long-term commitment to support the UAE’s digital transformation vision and leadership in artificial intelligence. He elaborated that the plan includes an investment of $1.5 billion in G42, over $10 billion for developing advanced cloud data centers, as well as more than $3 billion to strengthen local operations and build strategic partnerships.

In an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Kamel highlighted one of the key initiatives under this plan: collaboration with Khazna Data Centers, part of G42, to add a new capacity of 200 megawatts by 2026. This will enhance Azure’s sovereign cloud services within the country, enabling both government and private sectors to manage their digital operations more efficiently and securely, thus reinforcing the UAE’s position as a regional tech and AI solutions center.

He further explained that these investments will positively impact various sectors of the national economy by empowering innovators, supporting startups, and encouraging local industries to adopt next-generation technologies. Kamel emphasized that Microsoft is committed to building a comprehensive digital ecosystem that boosts productivity, enhances business efficiency, and fosters sustainable growth.

Additionally, the development of human capital is a top priority for the company’s strategy in the UAE. Microsoft has launched the “Microsoft Elevate UAE” initiative, aimed at training over 250,000 students and academics, alongside 55,000 government employees in essential AI skills for the future. This initiative is part of their commitment to train a million individuals in the UAE by 2027.

Kamel also noted that Microsoft supports scientific research and development in AI through the “AI for Good” lab and a global engineering development center in Abu Dhabi. These initiatives contribute to nurturing local talent and facilitating research related to language models for underrepresented languages, further establishing the UAE as a center for knowledge innovation in the region.

The next phase will witness further expansion of Microsoft’s infrastructure in the country, including the establishment of new data centers and the expansion of partnerships with both public and private sectors to address digital transformation needs in government, education, energy, and financial services. These projects are expected to bolster the UAE’s efforts in building a competitive digital economy and enhance its position as one of the most future-ready economies.

Moreover, the company is collaborating with Mohamed bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence and G42 through the Responsible AI Future Foundation to develop ethical and sustainable innovation models. This ensures that technological advancements are built on principles of transparency, trust, and long-term sustainability, solidifying the UAE’s status as a global leader in the responsible adoption of AI.

Kamel reaffirmed that Microsoft’s investments in the UAE go beyond mere technological expansion; they represent a strategic partnership aimed at supporting the vision of establishing an integrated digital economy based on knowledge and innovation, which seeks to empower people through technology. He emphasized that Microsoft remains dedicated to helping the UAE realize its ambitions of becoming a global benchmark for digital transformation and sustainable artificial intelligence.
