Dubai’s airports are gearing up for the winter travel season, bolstered by one of the strongest networks they have ever operated. Both Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport are expanding their operations by welcoming new airlines, increasing their operational capacity, and enhancing schedules to accommodate the expected surge in passenger traffic.
Direct flights continue to play a crucial role during the winter season at Dubai International Airport, accounting for approximately 55% of total passenger traffic.
This growth is part of a regular annual cycle that benefits from mild weather, a packed schedule of international trade, sports, and entertainment events, as well as an influx of residents traveling for vacations or family visits. Additionally, there is a steady flow of individuals choosing to live in Dubai for both the medium and long term.
Countries in Europe and Central Asia are driving this increase during the current winter season. Fly Arystan joined the network of airlines on November 29, operating two weekly flights from Aktau, Kazakhstan, while Austrian Airlines resumed services on December 2 with five weekly flights from Vienna.
Further growth is expected from European airlines, as Virgin Atlantic introduced the A350-1000 on the Dubai route, resulting in a 52% increase in available seats. British Airways has also reinstated its A380 aircraft on flights from London Heathrow, reflecting strong confidence from European markets as the holiday season approaches.
The seasonal rise in demand from South Asia and the broader Middle East region is also enhancing the air connectivity via Dubai International Airport.
Fairch Airlines launched two weekly flights from Sari, Iran, starting October 30, while Fly Jinnah added two weekly flights from Lahore beginning November 2. This promotes direct travel from regional hubs that typically witness significant travel peaks to and from Dubai during the winter season.
Saudi Arabia is experiencing one of the highest growth rates this season, being the second-largest market for Dubai International Airport, accounting for 7.8% of total passenger traffic up to October this year.
The total travel volume between Saudi Arabia and both Dubai International and Al Maktoum International Airports reached approximately 6.3 million passengers, representing an annual growth of 1.3%. Notably, Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport saw an exceptional increase of 459%, with the number of passengers rising to 173,000.
The role of Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport is becoming increasingly vital within Dubai’s broader aviation landscape, as more airlines are capitalizing on its available capacity and utilizing it as a complementary service to Dubai International Airport.
In the first ten months of the year, the airport welcomed 1.1 million guests, showing a growth rate of 36.6%, driven by rising demand from markets within the Commonwealth of Independent States, Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and Western Europe.
Air cargo and flight operations continue to show positive trends, reinforcing the strategic momentum of the airport and its expanding role.
Eurowings is playing a key part in supporting this growth by launching a new daily service to Dubai International Airport from Stuttgart, along with three weekly flights to Dubai World Central from Düsseldorf, and increasing flights to Berlin, Cologne, and Hanover.
Robert Whitehouse, Vice President of Research Development at Dubai Airports, stated that the winter season is always a pivotal time for Dubai’s aviation sector. The expanded network this season reflects the ongoing growth in demand levels, showcasing a balanced mix of incoming visitors, residents traveling abroad, and the increasing number of people choosing to make Dubai their home. This demonstrates the expansion of air connectivity, its growing diversity, and adaptability.
