Brouj Implements AI-Powered Autonomous Operation at Ruwais Facility

BOROUGE PLC has announced the successful completion of a proof-of-concept phase for AI-powered autonomous operations at its industrial facility in Ruwais. This achievement, in collaboration with Honeywell, marks a significant advancement in operational performance and strengthens the company’s long-term competitiveness, aligning with ADNOC’s ambition to become the leading energy company globally in AI adoption.

This milestone is based on field trials conducted throughout 2025 and signifies a substantial breakthrough towards developing the first AI-driven control room in the petrochemical sector for real-time and large-scale operations. These trials were carried out in an actual production environment, demonstrating potential operational efficiency gains of up to 20%, enhancing reliability, and reducing unplanned downtime by a similar margin. Additionally, this innovation is expected to improve production performance and decrease operational costs by up to 15%. The new technology also enhances process safety and supports sustainable operations by reducing energy consumption and associated emissions, in line with the company’s sustainability commitments and carbon footprint reduction goals while boosting the reliability of industrial supply chains.

Hazem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, stated, “This achievement illustrates Borouge’s commitment to accelerating growth, maximizing shareholder value, and achieving higher levels of operational efficiency. By developing autonomous operational capabilities in partnership with Honeywell, we solidify our competitive position and support ADNOC’s vision of becoming the most AI-driven energy company in the world.”

This initiative serves as a cornerstone of Borouge’s AI, digital transformation, and technology program, with the goal of generating a value of 2.11 billion AED (approximately 575 million USD) by 2025 through a series of AI-enabled and advanced digital initiatives. The program reflects the company’s focus on delivering tangible operational results through scalable practical applications, ensuring sustainable value over the long term.

Jim Maso, President and CEO of Honeywell Process Automation, commented, “Our collaboration with Borouge serves as a leading example of safely and effectively integrating AI-supported autonomous technologies within an existing industrial production system. This step confirms the significant potential offered by connected digital solutions in enhancing efficiency levels, reliability, and broadly improving operational performance.”

Following the successful proof-of-concept phase, Borouge will continue to explore opportunities to expand the application of autonomous technologies and investigate further potential to leverage AI across various units and facilities within Ruwais, supporting its objectives for digital transformation, operational excellence, and future readiness.
