Dubai International Airport has entered 2026 with remarkable momentum, leading the world’s airports in overall seating capacity for both international and domestic scheduled flights during January, according to data from the international airline and airport data organization OAG.
This month, Dubai International recorded over 5.5 million scheduled seats for departing international flights (a total of 11 million in both directions), surpassing Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, which ranked second with approximately 4.9 million seats. The gap between the two airports increased by over 580,000 seats within just one month, highlighting the airport’s rising air traffic and its ability to handle growing travel demands from various markets.
Strong Gains
Dubai Airport has seen significant gains compared to the previous year, as airlines continue to ramp up operations in response to the increasing desire to travel.
According to the data, Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) ranked third globally with a total capacity of 4.64 million seats, followed by Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport with about 4.4 million scheduled seats, and Shanghai Pudong International Airport in fifth place with 4.29 million seats. Istanbul Airport secured sixth place with 3.28 million seats.
The data revealed that London Heathrow ranked seventh with 4.24 million seats, while Delhi Airport followed in eighth place with 4.2 million seats, and Dallas Fort Worth Airport came ninth with 4 million seats. Seoul topped the list in tenth place with around 3.9 million seats.
Despite primarily depending on international flights, Dubai Airport outpaced other major airports that manage both international and domestic operations, marking a significant achievement for Dubai for the first time.
International Flights
When it comes to international flights, Dubai International Airport maintained its position as the largest airport in the world in terms of scheduled seating capacity for departing international flights in January 2026. London Heathrow ranked second, followed by Seoul, Singapore in fourth place, and Istanbul fifth.
The scheduled seating capacity of airlines serves as an indicator of air travel activity at airports, which helps them gauge business volume towards specific destinations. Airlines set their flight schedules in advance each month for routes to and from Dubai International Airport.
Dubai Airports Corporation anticipates the continuation of passenger traffic recovery this year, due in part to the expansion of national carriers, the attraction of new airlines, and a rise in tourist flows.
As Dubai International Airport approaches its maximum capacity, the Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport project signifies the start of a new era in the aviation sector for the city, expected to become the main gateway to the city by the early 2030s. The new airport aims to be a global smart aviation hub, equipped to adapt to future developments while elevating operational standards, sustainability, and connectivity to new heights.
